Hello,
By removing the placo from the house I just bought, I discovered that the walls are in machefer ... an old material made up of residues of the iron and steel industry mixed with stones.
This wall is to the north, half terraced, the other half beaten by the west winds. There are traces of infiltration, dried to this day.
I am thinking of a thermal insulation especially and phonic probably and I do not know by what tips begin so there are theories on the subject (with vapor barrier, without vapor barrier ... with vapor barrier between the wall and the insulation .... with vapor barrier between the insulation and the placo .... without placo but with a wooden siding ... I am lost).
I need your advice and proposals.
Goods.
Then
How to isolate a wall in machefer?
I discover that the walls are in machefer ...
Worrying, because slags, residues of combustion of ill-defined origin, often free, can contain dirt and dangerous pollutions like dioxins, lead, metal poisons, etc ... !!!
What time is your house?
The clinker comes from where ???
The old slags from before the 1970 to 1980 years, date from a time when the existence and the dangers of the dioxin were unknown, with in addition the impossibility to measure the concentrations too weak, for the devices of the time !!!
We neglected the danger of heavy metals !!
So in this case, everything is possible as a result of factories that have rejected quantities of frightening dioxins, killing all the cows of the surrounding grasslands, as in the 1930 years in Germany around some factories (revealed in the 1980 years). If in France, it was hidden as the dioxin incinerators 80 years to 90!
Do not breathe the dust of this clinker by demolishing it, take dust masks.

Hello, everything depends on the year of the machefer (material from the combustion of garbage in an incinerator), if it was done before 1990 yes there is a chance that it is dangerous, it was customary in waste incineration plants, to incorporate the soot produced by the filtering of fumes in the slag. and from 1991 it was forbidden that the soot be mixed with the slag for health pollution reasons. 1990 after XNUMX is sure it's good if it's lucky before it is dangerous if it is not well covered.

Thank you for the answer, but I do not yet know what year is the "clinker" but still it is that since we are in this accommodation which dates from 1900, my wife is often ill (headache, pain in whole body, etc ...) would there be risks of traces of heavy metals or other pollutants ???

These symptoms have not been listed to my knowledge as being due to the presence of lamb's lettuce by cons what is certain is that it causes cancer, and the human body as well as animals assimilates particles called dioxin very bad for the body, there are various associations that are fighting against but it is not yet fully won, I suggest you to watch this pdf especially the second page that explains how the dioxin goes into our body in various ways, this explanation is brief but it helps to understand better.
As for the symptoms even if they are not listed, it's just that your wife can be sensitive and perceive this contamination.
If you have any other questions do not hesitate, I will do my best.Good evening.
Finally, a lot of footpaths in France have been filled with slag and walking we breathe these junk !!
The problem is not limited to your house!
Burning woods or peat soaked in seawater found on a beach is full of dioxins (salt chlorine plus compounds benzene cycle of wood)!

Regarding the vapor barrier, looking from the inside to the outside of the house, the vapor barrier must be absolutely before the insulation. The insulation will allow to have less moisture on the vapor barrier by the fact that there will be less cold wall, unless thermal bridge. And the vapor barrier will retain moisture that should not go (let alone stay) in the insulation (you should know that moisture comes from the inside). If the insulation is well made and there is good ventilation, there will be no moisture on the plasterboard or the wooden siding (but to be sure that the wood is better, it absorbs and restores 'humidity).

Wall in machefer? What was the point of using this in constructions? Except for having a cheap material?
The machefers (incineration plant) are often composed of metals ... to banish the walls for their high thermal conductivity ...
For the initial question: I don't think it has any difference with a classic stone or brick wall ... just watchful to "seal" the interior side (potentially toxic dust)
