Agreement in Brussels on 2010 fishing quotas
AP | 16.12.2009/10/02 | XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.

The 27 members of the European Union have reached an agreement on stricter cod fishing quotas and the prohibition of fishing for certain endangered sharks. On the other hand, the catch quota for anchovies and herring has been increased.

After two days of negotiations, the 27 have not followed the scientific recommendations to drastically reduce quotas to preserve fish stocks, thus meeting certain demands from the fish industry.

Initially, the Commission wanted to go beyond the 15% reduction planned, with a 25% cut in the current quotas for the fishing areas where cod is most threatened.

In 1970, stocks of North Sea, English Channel and Skagerrak Strait exceeded 250.000 tonnes, up from just 50.000 today despite years of stock preservation efforts. AP
