GMO corn from Monsanto

by recyclinage » 15/12/09, 11:07

Toxic GMOs, the behavior of "green" consumers and a special climate for Sciences and Life: the green news in three briefs.

Monsanto corn harmful, study finds

Study published in the International Journal of Biological Sciences demonstrates the toxicity of three genetically modified corn from the American seed company Monsanto, the Independent Research and Information Committee on Genetic Engineering (Criigen, an activist association) announced Friday, December 11, as the World site notes.

"Monsanto's ninety-day tests are obviously not long enough to tell if it triggers chronic disease. That's why we're asking for at least two years of testing," explains a researcher cited in the article. Scientists are therefore calling for a "firm ban" on the import and cultivation of these three GMOs from Monsanto (MON810, MON863 and NK603). A meeting of EU ministers was scheduled for Monday on MON810 and NK603.

"Buy local, Act evil"

Green consumers who have the impression of being morally flawless would be prone to less virtuous behavior later. This is the result of a survey carried out by the American magazine Slate. To the question "Do green products make us better", two university professors answer in the negative. They took their students as their guinea pigs and concluded that those who displayed eco-citizenship in their purchases were more likely to cheat or steal if the opportunity presented itself. A positive point, all the same: the study shows that the simple fact of being surrounded by green products has the effect of making people more altruistic ... The ecological cause is therefore not totally lost.
