I start in my vegetable garden !!!

by Annanjou » 10/04/21, 14:45

Hello,
Yes I am going: for a few years, I mow (about 200 m2) without collecting the grass with a vague hope of vegetable garden. And then I got the sloth's book as a Christmas present and in January 2020 I spread out a small RB of hay on about 50m2. Currently, I have looked under the hay and it looks very promising. Well, there were still a few grasses that pierced the hay this winter: when that happened I would lift the hay with a fork and make them fall back on their noses; it calmed the weeds. But there, at the beginning of April, there are barely a few rumex (removed very easily because the soil is loose) and a few more dandelions. I wonder if I leave and return to my bouncer or if I put a hay back (I have almost an entire RB?
Ah and also, I am a little afraid of sowing at the beginning of a vegetable garden under hay, so I prepare seedlings sown at home (and I also bought a few, you have to start well, then I will try harvesting seeds).
Thank you!
Anne

welcome Anne
It seems to me a good start, a surface not too large, I remind you that I cultivate about 32m2, but I also squat a had everywhere : Mrgreen:
for the dandelions, they will point, so you play the same fate on them as on the rumex, me there is a tool that I like in the vegetable garden, it is a mason's trowel called cat's tongue, I find it good more manageable than a transplanter and in addition as it has a thin blade, it serves me as a knife, so I hit the root if I can't pull it out, and as Didier often says if you don't have everything first time, well it will be for the second, even the third but we get there

if not, you will also see that sowing in pots or terrines, when you have a small area, it's not bad, I do not sow practically anything except at the end of the season when the hay log is at the end, a matter of laziness, no furrows to open, I sow on the fly : Mrgreen:

so good luck, and have fun

Thank you !!!
So apart from the dandelions that I would have to wear, I go back to my deckchair :D
My seedlings are starting to arrive home:
- 2 leaves for the tomatoes in pots that I put outside during the day so that they "harden"
- 1 leaf for an artichoke in a cup (yes I tried the artichoke ... but later I bought one or 2 plants if necessary)
- nothing yet for parsley, basil, cucumber and Brussels sprouts so I'm waiting.
And outside I made trays (in fishmongers' trays according to André Abrahami) of salads to cut that point to 2 leaves, radishes (of course that encourages!) And I stand in front of the leek tray : Lol:
Ah and also a tray of flowers: marigold, borage nasturtium etc ...
and then ... I also bought strawberry plants (difficult to sow I think) and also tomatoes, basil, mint, just to ensure the blow if ever my seedlings failed me. I put them in a pot so that I can put them in if there is a threat of frost, but I will not plant under the hay until the frosts are really finished.
I also think I will stretch out a bit: I mowed a short strip to put potatoes that I will cover with thick hay: I had done a test last year and it worked great!
Voili voilou, I will give news as soon as things happen.
Thank you again and see you soon,
Anne

I also bought strawberry plants (difficult to sow I think) ...

It's not difficult, it's just that the variety is obtained vegetatively, which is easy with this plant which has chosen both options: you will be able to transplant the runners that will appear (there are strawberries that no longer have of this faculty, it seems to me, but it is not the majority).

otherwise, but I think that Ahmed will find something to complain about there, you do like me, you leave the strawberries to fend for themselves, it stolone and transplant itself, but indeed you will have a rather anarchic park, quite dense, which colonizes the space as it wants, but it is a question of laziness, last year a lot of green strawberries, a promising harvest but it was without counting on the appetite of the blackbirds who were in full nourishment of the whistles. 've not seen the color, on the other hand the mariguettes and the rising wood marigas that arrive afterwards have not suffered any predation from blackbirds, too bad they are the ones for which I had the fewest plants :(

this year the net is ready : Mrgreen:

We do as we feel and I do not have the soul of a censor! Stolonnage must be reasonably limited, because it pumps energy to the detriment of fruit production, which is still the goal. But what mainly imitates the production of strawberries is the dryness (superficial rooting) and the heat: these two factors oppose the capacity of strawberries to flower throughout the vegetative season (the flowers abort). You will therefore need to take care, naturally mulching (preferably crushed), but also watering et sprinkling refreshment if you want your dessert all summer ...

I actually put a good layer of BRF on the strawberries last year, not being able to renew this year too bad, and I watered, hence the promising harvest : Mrgreen:

after when the park has room, and it expands on its own, if it is larger but less productive, everything is a question of choice : Mrgreen:

You certainly mean: "from where the profitable harvest"?
Indeed, the trade-off between multiplication and production is done according to its own criteria, including obviously the available surface ... I was content to warn Annanjou of this peculiarity.

the harvest was beneficial for the blackbirds : Mrgreen:

indeed the strawberry plant is a nice plant for this side easy multiplication and production of tasty fruits, it is therefore a guest to take care of, small where I lived, there was a huge park, it was perhaps immense because I I was small, but hey, a barely maintained wooded park, a small private forest, and one of my great pleasures was to find each year, these few wild wild strawberries ... that's why I appreciate the mara des bois all the more
