BioUrban: micro-algae to purify the air of cities?

by Christophe » 25/09/19, 10:52

This "artificial tree" uses algae to absorb as much pollution as 368 trees

We all know that big cities are badly polluted. Did you know that in the world, 9 people on 10 breathe polluted air? An alarming figure, which a Mexican company decided to tackle. The solution: a kind of artificial tree, able to filter the gases and other particles contained in the urban air.

Today, Mexico is the country where pollution peaks are regularly the most affected. In order to react as quickly as possible, the company BioMiTech chose to take inspiration from nature, by designing this tree, able to release an amount of oxygen equivalent to 368 trees!

How it works ? The "BioUrban" will absorb pollution, thanks to algae located inside, which will allow it to purify the air we breathe. This large metal structure, 4 meters high, is made from stacked cylinders; recreating the phenomenon of photosynthesis of a real tree.

The first "BioUrban" was installed in Puebla, one of the main cities of Mexico. Nevertheless, count 50 000 dollars for each artificial tree. Hope is on the way: the cities of Monterrey and Mexico will soon be equipped. So, even if the "BioUrban" can not solve the problem alone, it's already a major step forward in terms of cleaning the air. We want the same in Paris! Good news! We will have a good excuse to continue deforesting everything!

and what is its energy consumption (electrical?) to work?

I would be curious to know the carbon footprint of such a device. The gain does not seem to me that obvious ...

Definitely not!

But now man can make € 100 artificial trees ... it's good for GDP : Mrgreen: : Evil:
