Renault Modus 1.4 16v, strange box on the intake air intake?

by Christophe » 18/02/20, 19:24

Considering this strange box (??) on a 2006 Renault Modus Essence 1.4 16v model (therefore not brand new as a car) ... but what is this box for on the air intake (upstream of the air filter) ? : Shock: : Shock: : Shock:

Isn't that a quiet box?

Uh, I don't really know ... do you want to develop?

This box is bypassed from the conduit ... there is no partition between the 2 holes on the main air intake (= the entire air flow does not pass through this box or very little ...)

A still is supposed to be (at the level of) the air box and especially on the entire air flow ... right?

I briefly knew the recovery lungs on 2 times ... This is what this box reminds me the most ... (damping of air shocks and recovery of loss of mixture by admission ...) but by far because we are far from a 2-stroke engine ...

Subsidiary question: why are there slots before this box on the main pipe?

Well then the engine manufacturers? No idea? : Idea: : Idea: : Idea:

It is very similar to an intake resonator which plays on the pressure waves in the intake ducts to attenuate a certain frequency of the kind unpleasant for the occupants of the car, or on the contrary to phase the pressure with the engine cycles to increase torque, performance etc ...

Tap "intake resonator" and you'll see it's relatively common.

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%A9sonance_de_Helmholtz

Automotive

Helmholtz resonance can be used to improve the air filling of internal combustion engines. Engine designers can exploit the resonance of the system formed by the intake manifolds and the intake manifold. Around an engine speed chosen by the designer, the opening-closing cycle of the intake valve and the periodic suction which follows will excite the resonance so that the overpressure in the combustion chamber occurs at the moment closing the intake valve. Thus, by working the geometry of the intake pipes (length, diameter) or by introducing a resonance plenum specially designed for this purpose in the intake line, it is possible to improve the volumetric efficiency of an engine with low speed.

On a Yamaha motorcycle called it "YEIS".

The Yamaha Intake Energy Control System (YEIS) performs the same function on two-stroke engines as the YICS system for their four-stroke counterparts.
Here too, the device is simple: it consists only of a storage chamber placed as a bypass on the intake pipe. When the engine is in its exhaust phase with the intake valves closed, the fuel mixture is directed to the storage chamber. When the engine reaches its intake phase, the valves open under the effect of the pressure change in the crankcase and the mixture stored is then sucked in at the same time as the main flow which comes from the carburetor. The YEIS thus regulates very simply the flow of the mixture whereas in the normal cycle, of the 'all or nothing' type, the fuel mixture collides with the closed valves in the exhaust phase with the turbulence that this implies, then is admitted. suddenly into the crankcase.
This gas flow situation due to YEIS leads to an increase in engine torque and compared to a conventional two-stroke, allows equal power with a smaller carburetor diameter. More power for less fuel consumption, this is essentially what the YEIS promises, introduced in 1980 on all-terrain motorcycles YZ250 and IT200 before it won many other models in the range, such as the Mate V50 moped.

It is indeed a stilling chamber, aka intake resonator.

Ah, here we are: we are therefore of course on the equivalent of a 2-stroke engine "lung" (it is exactly the YEIS system that you presented that I had in mind and on my last mob it was flexible)!

A Helmholtz resonator therefore has a similar function (to a lesser extent) to a trigger on a 2-stroke engine!

Thanks Flytox!

Well no it has nothing to do with it! Do not try to be right on this one! : Cheesy:

How it has nothing to do? That's what I was thinking about.
