Royal US units vs metric: Trump against the rest of the World!

by Christophe » 24/04/20, 14:08

To change a little Coronavirus!

The whole US paradox summarized in 1 image ... and this only concerns (certain) distances, 1 mass units, degrees and calendar.

It should be added: pressures and volumes .... Cubic inches, cubic inch like ... : Cheesy: : Cheesy: : Cheesy:

With us there is just the Marine Mile which is still used ... and obviously it is different from the Road Mile (that would have been too easy !!)

If we want to find more complex than the royal US units, we have to look into the measurement of radioactivity because there too it's a mess! Each nuclear physicist has almost given the name to a radiation unit !! : Cheesy:

In the petroleum industry ... We use the thumb for pipe diameters ...

and we have a rule that reconciles the thumb with metric units ... Hang on ... to calculate the volume of piping in liters per meter ....

pipe diameter in inches X half the diameter in inches = volume of pipe in liters per meter ... : Cheesy:

For a 10inch (DN 250mm but in fact it is 254mm) it makes us 10x5 = 50l / m ... with Pi ... It gives us 127²x3,14 = 50645ml ... or 50.6l : Mrgreen:

The pipe that farted between the harbor and the granpuit raff a few years ago is reputed to be a 20 inch ... on 268km long ... I let you calculate the volume it contained : Cheesy:

The only thing safe in the future. It is that there may chance that it conforms to our expectations ...

To defend a little Fahrenheit ..... Fahrenheit has of course not set the ice at 32 F and the boiling of water at 212 F!

He fixed the 0 F and the 100 F on other standards (it is the case to say it as you will see), less "pure" theoretically than the changes of state of water.

The 0 F is the melting temperature of the water-salt eutectic, that is to say the minimum melting point that a water + salt mixture can have (approximately -18 ° C). Less pure than water, but more stable because the freezing of water is only done at 0 ° C for very pure water.

And the 100 F is ... the internal temperature of a horse (about 38 ° C) Again much less "pure" than boiling water, but the 100 ° C is only valid under a pressure of 1 atm , while the horse is much more stable.

It's funny because it illustrates the difference in mentality "theoretical" of the French, and "pragmatic" of the Anglo-Saxons.

Ahhh everything can be explained! Excellent anecdote !!

So the formula is 2R² in inch? It's simpler anyway!

ps: yes sorry it's true that with the nautical mile we also have "conical" plumbing ... but as soon as we switch to copper, brass or PER we are in millimeter ...

It is sure that to put on the same scale the temperature of the bullet hole of a canasson and a water-salt eutectic (already the word there is only 2% of people who know what it is) must be really pragmatic !!! : Mrgreen: Do you have any others like that?

Then what salt is it? NaCl that licks the canasson I hope !! There I see the pragmatic relationship! : Mrgreen:

you are pragmatic because it was easier to find in practice than very pure water at the time of Fahrenheit

yes yes NaCl cooking salt!
but hey in fact the good criticism that you could have given me is that Fahrenheit was German, not "Anglo Saxon" (or maybe just Saxon : Mrgreen: )?

What are the Angles and the Saxons? (Incidentally, Fahrenheit was born in Gdansk, Poland)

Thank you for this clarification Guy! Gdansk was at the time also populated by Germans who called it Danzig (before being incorporated into the Prussian Empire)

it allowed me to correct my memories a bit; it was ammonium chloride, therefore NH4Cl and not NaCl, and the scale was divided into 96 degrees and not 100 degrees.
