To want to hang on would only serve the interests of the Catholic Church and would be proof of immeasurable pride. B16 gave a good signal of modernism and efficiency.
In time (say, before 1930), mentalities were different: the period of "physical decay" / death of a person was shorter and bringing together the cardinals more complex.
For the rest, a pope is absolutely not essential: Reformed churches (which are less painful than the Catholic Church) have largely demonstrated for almost 500 years.
