Review, test and IR photos of the Arctic Air Ultra (mini evaporative cube air conditioning)

Buying well and choosing a product or service well means, in addition to being satisfied, consuming less and preserving the planet, it is essential in 2021 to buy better! Also the exchange of information and experiences makes it possible to avoid various scams and crooks. In 2021, it is essential to exchange your experiences of use, positive or negative, because the market for products and services for the consumer has never been so abundant in the history of mankind. Helping to choose better is essential because buying better means buying sustainable!

Review, test and IR photos of the Arctic Air Ultra (mini evaporative cube air conditioning)

by Christophe » 25/06/19, 14:31

It's been months since I saw it advertise on the Internet that I wanted to test this kind of "mini water evaporating air conditioning" very small and ultra portable.

Yesterday I came across the "Artic Air Ultra" model for 40 € in a real store, so I jumped at the opportunity ... the prices can go down to 20 € in promotion on the internet but this model is apparently the model "ULTRA" which works 2 times better, then as it is "seen on TV" then it is certainly true! : Mrgreen:

The principle consists in "evaporating" water by misting and passing through a felt ... a fan of 7,5W max power. The actual consumption therefore remains very very low (compared to conventional air conditioners). So what about the actual cooling efficiency compared to air conditioner that consumes 100 times more?

Answer in this unboxing and first impressions after less than 24h of use... with, icing on the cake and because here we are serious: IR photos of real cooling (which you may not see on other tests ...)

No blabla like on the Youtube video, here we focus on the essentials: manufacturing and use quality and cooling efficiency...

The box and the 4 facades of explanations, very "tele-shopping" mode ...

Opening of the cardboard: no polystyrene and a real leaflet in French. 2 good points!

Power supply 5V DC 1.5A max, so 7,5W max: it is compatible with a small solar panel 15-20W for the garden, camping or beach, very good!

The sponge to pre-moisten (see freezing but the "super-cold" effect only lasts a few minutes):

The improvement of the ultra model certainly comes from the deflector placed after the fan and before the fogging nozzle:

Impressions after a few hours of use

a) It remains a fan: you have to be in the flow to be cool Beyond 2m you do not feel much
b) I think it will not really cool (= feeling of freshness out of the airflow) than at best the volume of a very small room like WC ...
c) The water consumption is quite important: you must fill all the 2h (test made 26,5 ° 30 ° C inlet air) but it is not very binding or important, just to provide a bottle next. But the reserve is really weak: about 200 ml.
d) It is not possible to measure the efficiency of a fan since it does not lower the temperature of the air: it just increases the heat exchange on our skin. So putting a thermometer before and after a conventional fan, air brewing, will not give any difference between the air inlet and the outlet.

But in the case of the arctic cube I measured (in max speed) a lowering of the temperature of the order of 6 ° C: one goes from 26 ° C input 20 ° C output! It is not negligible!

If I had the airflow (I'll get it) we could estimate the COP of this type of fan: in my opinion it pulverizes that of all other air conditioners! The IR photos and analyzes arrive in the following message!

ps: do you think he will be able to snow cannon in winter? : Mrgreen:

I did not have to look very far the airflow, it was on the 4ieme cover of the record:

Datasheet.jpg
Datasheet.jpg (414.13 KIO) Accessed 12199 times

We therefore have: 6,49W absorbed for 5,97 m3 air / min at 26 ° C cooled by 6 ° C

Heat balance:

a) Refrigerant power = 5,97 / 60 (m3 / s) * 1,18 (kg / m3) * 1006 (J / kg ° C) * 6 (° C) = 708 Watts : Mrgreen:

b) COP = 708 / 6,48 = 109

As expected, conventional air conditioners with their 4 at COP 6 are therefore sprayed!

And most importantly for the end: IR photos

I specify that the color (dark gray) and the plastic of the grids of entry and exit are the same: the values measured with the IR with an emissivity of 0,95 are thus coherent and do not need correction since it is the delta that interests us.

I measured at 26 ° C and at 22 ° C at inlet air temperature and 3 speed.

The temperature displayed at the top left is measured on the white center slider. The green and red sliders indicate the hottest areas of the measurement.

Entry at 26,7 ° C

Delta = 5,5 ° C !!

Conclusion: these little "teleshopping gadgets" coolers are ultimately not (gadgets) and in fact work much better than one might think because with a COP that exceeds 100 * (!!) this in fact, of far and away, the most economical active air conditioners in the world.

Obviously their efficiency and powers are limited ... and it will be necessary to see the wear over time, one can fear that the use of a limestone water does not reduce their life time quite and quickly (but, for the not penguins you can always clean the vermin misting nozzle).

In short in this heat wave period and if you want an ecological additional cooling, you can buy an "air conditioning cube" with your eyes closed *

* at least for the "Ultra" version tested here

It may not be necessary to compare what is not comparable ...
Certainly, to get a little fresh air in the figure when you get home from work, it may be a good solution.
But to cool a room .... without it becoming a sauna.
Try in a room-type room, closed, recording the deltaT input / output for a few hours. It may fall quickly. And after going to sleep, you promise to sweat ....

the evaporation of water is always very effective for refreshing.

The trouble is that it moistens the room, it can become too much sometimes ...

I have never said the opposite: it must be in the flow ... like any fan, except that it really cools the air!

So it's better than a conventional fan for efficiency and it's 100 times less consumer than an air conditioner ... for a few euros of investment

Of course the efficiency of the global cooling is limited (only by the reserve), but 16 ° C when we start from 22 ° C is already more than enough to sleep (when we are in the flow of course ...) !

As I said, the actual cooling must be limited to a few small m3 and some ° C so in a volume of WC at best : Cheesy:
So no, I will not do the test of the room that you propose since it will not be relevant ...

If you want, we could compare the flow of this extra air conditioning to clothes: must be in it for it to work! : Mrgreen:

We agree, the possible comparison is that with a fan. Not with an air conditioner. Otherwise, you can also compare with wet towels that you spread on a clothes rack, it will have some efficiency and the COP will be infinite if you neglect the energy you spend to extend!

The wet towels on a clothes rack and without air flow it does not provide any noticeable refreshment ... even if necessarily it pumps calories by natural evaporation so no it is not the infinite COP : Cheesy:

You can also extend them on you, it is not necessarily practical in all circumstances but you will see it is effective! :D
