Oil, a story of power (1/2)
Rise and fall

How has oil, a now essential raw material, disrupted not only our lifestyles and the economy, but also the global geopolitical order? A fascinating return to the sources of black gold.

The appearance of black gold was in its time a miraculous revolution: kerosene lamps lit homes like never before, factories using motor machinery suddenly increased their productivity ... Thanks to oil, economic growth jumped and the fortunes of some, like John D. Rockefeller, the first billionaire in history, have reached record sums. The coin, of course, has its flip side, notably the influence of oil on the course of the two world wars.

Oil, a story of power (2/2)
Greed and corruption

How oil has changed our lifestyles, the economy and the global geopolitical order. The second part of this fascinating documentary on black gold begins in 1973, when the OPEC countries decide to increase the price of oil and provoke the first world oil shock.

Oil and power are linked. As the main source of energy, black gold decides growth and recession, consumption, poverty and war. In 1973, while the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) reduced its deliveries to sanction its interference in the Arab-Israeli war, the West became aware of the weight of this raw material, a geopolitical lever capable of reversing relations of power overnight.

Bitter taste
Marking the beginning of Western dependence, the first oil shock, exposed in the second episode of Andreas Sawall's documentary, retrospectively takes on the bitter taste of a missed opportunity: promising but under-invested renewable energy research would have could constitute a way out. Physicists, historians and journalists speak in this documentary rich in anecdotes, which traces the advent of oil as a raw material inseparable from our way of life. As the United States has established itself as the world's largest producer, it seems unlikely that the West will abandon this resource - essential for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and electronics - on which we have become more than dependent.
