OVH: fire in Strasbourg, datacenter destroyed. What consequences on the French internet?

Hi-tech electronic and computer equipment and Internet. Better use of electricity, help with the work and specifications, equipment selection. Presentations fixtures and plans. Waves and electromagnetic pollution.

OVH: fire in Strasbourg, datacenter destroyed. What consequences on the French internet?

by Christophe » 10/03/21, 20:23

It sucks a max ... mega fire ches OVH ... 29 HS servers ... hundreds of thousands of sites in decanter ... and certainly tens of TB lost forever if the backups remained in the same datacenter ... : Shock: : Shock: : Shock:

A huge loss for the French-speaking web ...

National education affected ... Reset notes ... it will please the dunces :) : Cheesy:

The hypothesis of the disappearance of an entire school file - which could have been on the burnt servers without having been saved elsewhere - is not considered by the national education system either. “Data is never stored in one place,” continues Rue de Grenelle. You just have to give yourself the time to recover the backups. If a note has disappeared, it is for example if a teacher has entered it last night. "

Except that computer ... a place ... it's a machine ... automatic backups are rarely saved to other datacenters but simply to other machines in the same datacenter! Quite simply for reasons of intra datacenter bandwidth costs ...

Except for hypersensitive data types of banking ...

3,6 MILLION HS SITES !! WTF !!

Inaugurated in 2012, it has a capacity of 12 servers. It houses part of the very strategic Hosted Private Cloud offering targeting large OVHCloud customers. This IaaS solution based on VMware virtualization technology is fully managed by the group's teams. SBG2 also hosts dedicated servers used by many French websites. Among the impacted OVHCloud services: domain names, public cloud and dedicated cloud, VPS, dedicated servers, shared hosting, CDN ...

And AMHA the majority is lost forever (small and medium sites without external backup ...)

By the way, I don't understand anything: https://www.journaldunet.com/web-tech/c ... ors-ligne/

Updated on 11/03/21 11:11

Fire at OVH: 3,6 million websites have broken down An OVHCloud data center in Strasbourg was destroyed by fire on the night of March 9. A second saw four out of eight server rooms go up in smoke. Electricity was cut in the other two data centers on the site.

[Update Thursday, March 11, 2021 at 11:11 am] It's time to take stock. Following the fire that broke out on the night of March 9 to 10 on the OVHCloud site in Strasbourg, 3,6 million websites representing 464 distinguished domain names (ie including subdomains) went offline. The figure is published by Netcraft, an American specialist in Internet monitoring. "More than 18% of the IP addresses assigned to OVH in our last Web Server Survey published two weeks ago were no longer responding yesterday between 7 am and 8 am," says Netcraft. While the GAFAMs penetrate Europe with a merciless competitive force, it is a real explosion for French Tech whose image will de facto tarnish. His torchbearer suffered the most important industrial disaster in its history.

By definition (approximate) 1 website = 1 domain ... If I understand this passage, 3.6 Millions we are talking about web PAGE in this case ... it's not at all the same!

Ah these journalists ...
