France: renewables provided more than a quarter of electricity consumption in 2020

AFP published on 23 Feb 2021

Renewable energies continued to grow and provided more than a quarter of the electricity consumed in France last year, thanks to hydro and wind farms, according to a report published on Tuesday.

"Renewable energies contributed 26,9% to the coverage of electricity consumption in mainland France during the year 2020", indicates the Syndicate of Renewable Energies (SER) in a report published with other partners, including the electricity transmission (RTE) and distribution (Enedis) networks.

This is an increase of nearly four points compared to the figures for 2019 (23,1%), which "is explained by a historic renewable production of 120,7 TWh (increase of 10,4% compared to 2019) and by a drop in consumption due to the health situation ".

In detail, production was driven by wind (+ 17,3%) and hydro (+ 9,3%).

The total capacity of the renewable park installed also continued to increase last year, reaching 55.906 MW at the end of 2020, up by 2.039 MW. This growth was driven by wind power (+1.105 MW) and solar (+820 MW).

However, it is still the hydroelectric park that dominates the French landscape even if its power has remained almost stable.

Excluding renewables, France still depends heavily on nuclear power for the production of its electricity, with a share of over 70% in recent years.

It's not bad 27% !! And + 4% in absolute terms in 1 year is huge ... thank you the Covid :)

But there was still 10% relative growth in renewable energy production ... it's huge too (and independent of the covid) ...

It may not be just the health situation:
Currently, nearly 78 self-consumption installations are connected in France, for a total power of 000 MW. The Government now wishes to go further by accelerating the development of French self-consumption in electricity. Collective self-consumption indeed allows a group of people to consume the electricity they produce using their own resources, often from photovoltaic solar panels.
Figures for October 2020 https://tecsol.blogs.com/mon_weblog/202 ... tive-.html

With the complexity of the procedures and that it is necessary to pay beyond 3kW, few people declare their self-consumption on the Enedis portal. (when you buy a kit on the net, we don't even tell you that you have to take steps - or it's in very small letters).
So in fact, we do not know the power installed in self-consumption.
2 times 320 MW, 3x, more, less ?. If the consumption on the network drops permanently, we will have a small idea of the power installed in self-consumption.

Electricity: a year 2020 marked by the pandemic, coal fall to its lowest level since 1950

AFP published on March 03, 2021

Both electricity production and consumption fell in France with the pandemic in 2020, a year which also saw wind power increase strongly and coal decline to its lowest level since 1950, according to the report of the RTE high-voltage network manager. published Wednesday.

"With 460 TWh, French electricity consumption is down 3,5% compared to 2019 due to the health crisis leading to a decline in industry activity and many sectors of the economy", according to RTE.

Production, down 7%, was also affected by the Covid-19 pandemic due to the drop in consumption but also to disruptions in the maintenance schedule for EDF's nuclear reactors. In addition, with the final shutdown of the Fessenheim plant, nuclear production fell by 11,6% compared to 2019.

As had already been announced, the production of renewable energies has increased: + 17% for wind power, + 8% for hydraulics and + 2,3% for solar. "With a production of 39,7 TWh, or 7,9% of French production, wind power production exceeds that of gas power plants and becomes the third source of electricity production in France", behind nuclear and hydraulics, RTE note.

The thermal power stations were little used and the production of electricity from coal (- 12,7%), very polluting and emitting of CO2, notably reached its lowest level since 1950. The government envisaged the closing of the last ones. coal-fired power plants by 2022.

CO2 emissions from the French electricity sector, which are already usually low, have fallen by nearly 9% compared to 2019. Finally, France remains an electricity exporter "on all of its borders and remains the most exporting country of electricity. 'electricity in Europe'. The positive balance of exchanges stands at 43,2 TWh.
