Is it possible to make a washable and reusable mask?
Yes, if you follow Afnor's instructions (see the top of the article to download the document), the barrier mask produced can be reused under certain conditions. It will be necessary to wash it after each use for 3 to 4 hours maximum via a washing cycle in the washing machine of at least 30 minutes (wetting, washing and rinsing included) at a temperature of 60 degrees. "It is recommended that the barrier mask completely dry within a period of less than two hours after leaving the wash. Barrier masks must not air dry", specifies Afnor, which also indicates that any damage detected must lead to a replacement of the mask which must be thrown in a specific packaging (plastic bag for example).

Why shouldn't you put a coffee filter?

On the web, there are many tutorials recommending the use and integration of a coffee or vacuum filter into your mask to better filter the air. According to Afnor, this is an error that alerts the general public: "despite their good filtering capacity, these types of filters do not meet the requirement in terms of the harmlessness of inhaled air. Indeed, these materials are likely to release irritating substances into the air which may cause a risk of allergy (especially severe asthma attacks) and / or toxicity. In addition, these types of filters do not perform well in terms of breathability ". Forget them and replace them if you want with a layer of felt.

I think the coffee filter is the simplest "better than nothing" mask. Used as is, nothing to manufacture, ergonomic, ... tested and adopted.
