ANSES has just released its preliminary report on the new mobile telephone standard. It highlights the lack of scientific data available on the 5G frequency bands.
The eagerly awaited report on the potential biological and health effects of 5G will be published in the first quarter of 2021 by ANSES. In the meantime, the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety issues a preliminary study setting out the state of the art in this area.

Regarding the 3,5 GHz band which will be the first to be deployed in France this summer, the agency highlights "a significant lack, or even an absence, of data relating to potential biological and health effects in the frequency bands considered" .
The exposure would be close to that of 2,4 GHz, used for Wi-Fi communications. However, the specificity of 5G signals (modulation, power) could influence the levels. The ANSES specialized committee of experts concluded that there was a need for additional studies.

As for millimeter waves, the effects have been widely studied, but for frequencies between 40 and 60 GHz. For the 26 GHz which will be deployed by 2022, it will be necessary to extrapolate the data available from frequencies around 30 GHz whose properties would be similar. But here again, the Committee of Experts recommends that new studies be carried out specifically in the band 24,25-27,5 GHz.

A problematic deadline
For the moment, it is therefore impossible to formally conclude that 5G is safe. We will have to wait for the publication next year of the results of these new explorations. Either well after the deployment of 5G whose frequencies will be allocated in June and whose deployment will begin this summer.

This delay is problematic because it risks fueling all the fantasies in this area.. In some countries like Switzerland, 5G is generating strong resistance movements.

Remember that the electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones were classified in 2014 as a possible carcinogen for humans by the World Health Organization. Experiments in rats had observed tumors after long and heavy exposure to 2G and 3G. However, the definite risk of carcinogenicity is still not proven for humans.
