2,6 million electric vehicles sold worldwide in 2019 ...

Philippe SCHWOERER / 17 Jan 2019

… Including 1,5 million in China and 500.000 in Europe: This is what Bloomberg New Energy Finance predicts for the next 12 months.

10 forecasts
As wishes for the new year, BNEF has formulated 10 positive forecasts to move towards "a cleaner future". They relate more particularly to renewable energies, their storage in batteries, and the development of electric vehicles.

Including buses, coaches and lighter models, BNEF figures that nearly 5 million passenger electric vehicles are in circulation worldwide to date. With an increase of 40%, - down from the 70% growth recorded in 2018 -, 2,6 million additional units would be added to this volume in 2019.

500.000 for Europe + 425.000 for the United States
For Europe, BNEF plans strong growth in the Nordic countries and in Germany. "Sales in Italy have been slow but should start to increase in 2019, while in the United Kingdom, they will probably be stable or down," said the organization. No forecasts for France: good or bad sign? News probably too hot in France to engage in projections over 12 months.

Bloomberg expects 425.000 electric vehicles to be sold in North America in 2019, up from 405.000 in 2018. Recognizing a major impact on Tesla Model 3 commercialization figures, BNEF estimates that momentum spurred the year the latter "will be difficult to maintain if a less expensive model cannot be introduced quickly".

1,5 million for China + 100.000 for Japan and South Korea

Unsurprisingly, China would once again be in the lead, with a share of 57% of the total world sales recorded. However, the doubling of the turnover observed in 2018 for these machines would not be reproduced in 2019. As a justification, BNEF plans a reduction in purchasing aid in China as of February as the new quota in energy vehicles news would not be enough to erase, because of requirements still too chick.

Combining their figures, the acquisitions of electric vehicles linked to passenger transport would approach 100.000 units for Japan and South Korea.
