How channel bosses try to block the appearance of "nutri-score" on television

by sen-no-sen » 30/05/18, 16:39

Nutri-Score in TV ads: Channel bosses see red and write to the governmentThey fear a significant drop in their advertising revenue if the logo indicating the most harmful food products was to be imposed on TV.
Don't touch junk food! According to "Le Canard Enchaîné" published this Wednesday, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe received on May 10 a letter of warning signed by the bosses of TV channels and media groups. Delphine Ernotte for France Télévisions, Gilles Pélisson for TF1, Nicolas de Tavernost for M6 and the others have expressed their concern about the amendment tabled by the majority deputy Olivier Véran last month. The officials took care to send a copy of their mail to several ministers, to the president of the Superior council of audio-visual and to the deputy concerned.

As explained very well and without language of Wood Patrick le Lay ex CEO of TF1 in a book "Leaders in the face of change" (Eighth day editions):

"There are many ways of talking about television. But from a business perspective, let's be realistic: fundamentally, TF1's job is to help Coca-Cola, for example, to sell its product. (...).
But for an advertising message to be perceived, it is necessary that the brain of the viewer is available. Our programs are intended to make it available: that is to say, to entertain, to relax to prepare it between two messages. What we sell to Coca-Cola is human brain time available (...).
Nothing is more difficult than to obtain this availability. This is where the permanent change is. We must constantly look for programs that work, follow fashions, surf trends, in a context where information is accelerating, multiplying and becoming commonplace. "

Nothing has obviously changed, and the affixing of a nutriscore would be very detrimental to the agri-food sector in the sense that most of the products sold, a fortiori through advertising are of poor nutritional quality or harmful ...

absolutely! If we learn in schools and universities, art and how to decode advertising systems (all based on the same principles) it would be the death of this flourishing industry. Hence the question: why do not we do it?
For nutri-score and its extreme simplification for a better understanding of consumers, it is not a panacea for all that.
With few exceptions (aromatic herbs, teas, coffees, yeasts, etc.), all products processed and the drinks are concerned with the Nutri-Score. Unprocessed products such as fresh fruits and vegetables or fresh fish are not affected, as well as alcoholic beverages.
alcoholic beverages (would not be drinks?), whose note would be well beyond the E, are products largely transformed: hypocrisy? Liquor Lobbies? And why not tobacco while we are there!

Yes alcohol (1) but also "television products" such as "reality TV" and other rubbish, with why not a little warning at the bottom of the screen such as: "beware this program seriously harms your mental health"! : Lol:
One can also make the same remark with cosmetics tested on animals or detergents whose impact is far from innocuous.

In fact even if the nutriscore is far from perfect, it is clear that it will pose a serious problem to sellers of all kinds, because it is ultimately almost all products that would be sanctioned by a red card! : Lol:

(1) all advertising on alcohol must be accompanied by a warning and a pictogram concerning pregnant women on bottles, the latter measuring on average 0,5mm! : Lol:
The industrialists know very well how to circumvent the laws ...

The definition of the term politician will have to be reviewed in the dictionaries: currently it is that:Person who exercises political action.
I propose the following:Versatile agent acting as interface between the economic world and the world of consumers.
This definition seems to me much more objective. 8)

The boredom of this definition is that it appears neutral, as if the politician stood in a simple in-between, while he is elected by the consumers (and, from this point of view, whatever their choice), but actually represents the economic powers ....

Nutri-score in advertising : the amendment of the deputy of Isère Olivier Véran rejected
- The amendment of the member of the Isère Olivier Veran (LREM) to make mandatory the logo Nutri-score in advertising was rejected by the deputies. The result of lobbying operations? Not only. Because the measure, not in conformity with European law, could also dissuade the establishment of labeling on food packaging, it is not mandatory ...
Will the amendment defended by Olivier Véran stand up to his passage in the Senate? The deputy of Isère voted the bill of Gérard Collomb ... The deputy of Isère, Olivier Véran, in the National Assembly The amendment presented and defended by the deputy of Isère Olivier Véran (LREM ) to make mandatory the display of the logo Nutri-score in the advertisement was rejected Sunday by the deputies (to 45 votes against 18). The proposal, already rejected in committee and not favored by the Minister of Agriculture Stéphane Travert, aimed to circumvent the weaknesses of this simplified nutritional labeling, reduced to a color code. Indeed, the Nutri-score logo affixed on foodstuffs to enlighten the consumer, is not obligatory. The member for Isère hoped to impose it in a roundabout way during the review of the Agriculture and Food Bill. But was the result run in advance, because of lobbying? These have indeed not failed, both on the side of industrial agribusiness and TV channels that have openly split a letter to the Prime Minister *. Yet it was not so much the lobbies that got the better of this amendment.

Risk of procedure and demotivation of food industry

"This is not what motivated most of the votes against this amendment, says Olivier Veran. Two arguments were considered, for which I failed to convince. A minor risk of procedure before the court of justice of the European Union, on the one hand, and the fear that the obligation in the pub demotivates the voluntary industrialists to apply Nutris-core on their packaging, on the other hand. "

Last April, the deputy from Isère said he was convinced: "It complies with European law, it does not cost anything, and it will significantly strengthen the information to consumers." The Minister of Agriculture, who had vetoed it, felt that such an obligation would be an obstacle to the market.

"It happens to win (tax soda, for example), it happens to have to go several times, considers the member of Isere. But I guarantee you that the little logo will appear one day next in pubs, because it responds to the desire of citizens to be better informed. "

Nutritional labeling "nutri-score" on food products has been, unsurprisingly, reduced to its simplest expression by the food industry lobbies and if it exists, it is only based on voluntary service. This has the consequence that all the actors who have good reasons to refuse to clearly display the poor quality of their products can free themselves from it without worry and therefore not get involved in improvements in their productions ... It is not good life? 8)
When, for the sake of fairness, the recording of traffic offenses on the basis of voluntary service alone? : Lol:

I advise you to consult the list of companies that have committed voluntarily in this process: rest assured, it is not very long ...
