In the case of this scientist, the intervention of technology is certainly very visible, but remains true for each of us, even if we prefer to hide it: we depend on technology for our survival and more and more ... This has great implications ...

of course technology is part of our lives and I do not intend to do without it, on the other hand, to no longer consider only technological solutions to solve the problems that are facing us there is a margin ...

Yes, technology is part of our lives and this dependence is a real problem in the particular framework that is ours, that is to say the orientation towards the greatest possible dissipation of energy and the resulting destruction. .

We can maybe start with that:

Inflatable habitat for the Moon from 2022

By Sylvie Rouat on 10.11.2017

By 2022, the Americans could have an inflatable module in the low orbit of the Moon. It would serve as habitat for lunar missions or as a storage warehouse for trips to Mars and beyond.

Everyone tends to rise to their level of incompetence, Stef K has arrived!
Its solution is completely megalomaniac, if we are unable to preserve our civilization on earth why would we do better elsewhere?
The challenges to be met are infinitely more complex than preserving our environment.

Phil53, you write:
... if we are unable to preserve our civilization on earth why would we do better elsewhere?
The challenges to be met are infinitely more complex than preserving our environment.

Here, common sense and a more in-depth analysis come together: without giving up on the causes, it is futile to hope to escape the consequences by simply displacing the problem, above all, as you point out quite aptly, if it is in a context of much greater complexity.

I think the initiative of S.Hawking aims above all to raise funds to re-boost (sic!) space exploration via its project Breakthrough Starshot.
It is true that with the advent of economic liberalism and the end of the Cold War, large space and scientific projects no longer have the wind in their sails.
So there is a need to make the buzz, and that is exactly what it takes these days to make money ...
Given its level of competence, it is difficult to conceive of taking this information literally for two reasons:

1) Indeed if we are technologically capable of embarking for another planet, this means that we would therefore be equally capable of making "repairs" there, and those for much less cost, not bad to leave in a such case.

2) The human being is not made for space travel and even less for the conditions of a very possible exoplanet, it would be necessary to "modify" ourselves to arrive at this very hypothetical scenario, but in such a case, that would mean once again that we would be able to stay on earth ...

The only case that would force us "to leave" would be the expansion of our sun into a red giant ... but we still have nearly a billion years left, so we are "wide".
