if the ammonia was sufficient for the temperature difference we would be satisfied with a single stage: we share in 2 stage to choose 2 fluid better adapted to the temperature, it does not change the yield ... with a single fluid the yield would be the same but the machine would be more expensive either because of too much pressure in the hot part ... or a too low pressure in the cold part so low density and huge pipes

for a heat pump heating, the gap is small and 2 successive fluid would not bring any advantage

Chatelot Hi!

There are no 2 fluids but only one in two circuits, it also works with freon!

This is not really a problem of compressor because a stronger compression will make the liquid gas with the risk that the compressor is damaged by pumping liquid, the strong compression requires several stages of compression (large piston pumping in a smaller one) for Achieve efficiency and cost is higher than just 2 separate compressors!


By using 2 stages one avoids making liquid the liquid so as to avoid the breakage of the compressor!
