Two large fires raging in Greece

Two major forest fires raged Wednesday morning in Greece, on the tourist island of Skopelos in the Sporades north of the Aegean and on the island of Evia, northeast of Athens.

In Skopelos, fire broke out on Tuesday evening near the small port of Panormou in the south-west of the island burning about fifty hectares of pine forests in a region difficult to access. Three planes, a helicopter, 14 vehicles and 80 men are fighting the disaster, the fire department said. On the island of Evia, the fire has been burning since night brushwood and small holm oaks in the Marmari region in the south-west of the island. The fire reached the surroundings of houses without any of them having been touched, according to the firefighters. Two planes and two helicopters, 18 vehicles and 56 men are on site as high winds blow in the area. A third front erupted at the end of the morning in Koropi west of Athens in an area of ​​olive trees and brushwood but "the risks are limited" added the spokesperson. (NLE)
