Oil spill in Lebanon (and soon another)

by Christophe » 30/07/06, 13:34

The bombing by the Israeli aviation of the oil tanks of the power station of Jiyeh, in southern Lebanon, caused "the greatest ecological catastrophe in the Mediterranean", affirmed this Saturday the Lebanese Minister for the Environment.

"So far, 10.000 to 15.000 tonnes of crude oil has spilled into the sea, it is the greatest ecological disaster the Mediterranean has known and it risks having terrible consequences not only for our country but for all the countries of the eastern Mediterranean ", assured Mr. Yacoub Sarraf. (belga)

It's a Gov.lb.

This is the site:
Republic of lebanon
Minister of the Environment.

Must this be a hideout for terrorists?
Or is it already a ghostly entity?

For the information disabled ...
: Cheesy:
On TF1: No rocket in Haifa for 36 hours. The locals blow and go to the beach.
(In Lebanon on the coast, they only have the suffocating smell of the oil spill ... The world is badly done!)

On France 2, there were some images of the oil spill. Locate the start at 7:10 a.m.

While in Haifa, we find the joys of the beach (JT from 13 p.m.)
In Lebanon, we do things differently:
15 tonnes of fuel oil spilled into the sea, polluting some 000 km of coastline.

Oil spill - Green Line announces its own campaign in Ramlet el-Baïda tomorrow
First cleaning operation of the port of Jbeil

The ceasefire has been declared, Lebanon can begin to resolve the problems resulting from the war, in particular the oil spill caused by the Israeli bombing of the Jiyeh power station in the early days of the conflict. Danish experts dispatched to Lebanon by the European Union (EU) yesterday, under the direction of the Ministry of the Environment and the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, undertook, with the help of the army, Defense and the municipality of Jbeil, to start cleaning up one of the most polluted sites on the Lebanese coast, the port of Byblos. The aim was in fact to test the effectiveness of the cleaning equipment sent by Norway and Kuwait on the specific case of pollution in Lebanon, before launching a larger operation. This material mainly consists of pumps specially designed for extracting fuel oil from water (which is currently the priority), floating bars to isolate the water table and absorbent fabrics, as well as chemical dispersants for cleaning residues .
For its part, the ecological association Green Line, in particular two of its members, Waël Hmaïdane and Ali Darwiche, held a press conference near another polluted port, that of Raouché, where the fishermen's boats have been immobilized for a month in a huge puddle of fuel that covered the sea water. The association announced that it would start Thursday a clean-up operation of the beach of Ramlet el-Baida. Mr. Hmaïdane asked the ministry to provide a storage place for the polluted sand that will be removed from the beach. He said that in the meantime, this sand will be stored safely in Ramlet el-Baida itself.
Asked by L'Orient-Le Jour on this question, Ghada Mitri, communication manager for this dossier at the Ministry of the Environment, assured that coordination is continuous with the NGOs working in the field, but recommended that anyone wants to participate. cleaning operations should stay in touch with the ministry to avoid duplication. She also indicated that the ministry is currently looking for a location that will serve as a site for the storage, processing and disposal of the various materials that will result from the national clean-up operation, which each require a different approach.
During the press conference, Darwiche asked the environment ministry to proceed quickly with a plan to clean up the coast, and the international community to consider putting pressure on Israel for obtaining compensation, especially for fishermen. Commenting on the operation which took place in Jbeil the same day, he hoped that the teams would not be long in coming to settle the acute problem of the port of Ramlet el-Baida also.
On another level, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) will organize tomorrow in Piraeus, the port of Athens, an international meeting to deal with the oil spill in the eastern Mediterranean. following the conflict in Lebanon.

Regional meeting in Piraeus
The meeting convened by IMO Secretary General Efthymios Mitropoulos and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner will also bring together European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas, representatives from Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey , added a statement yesterday from the Greek Ministry of Shipping.
"The objective of the meeting is to agree on a common strategy to deal with pollution and to reflect on preventive actions with a view to a possible extension of the oil spill," added the text. The experts will also examine the economic aspects of the means to be put in place "as soon as conditions in the region allow it".
IMO and UNEP "are monitoring the situation closely" thanks to the United Nations Regional Center for Pollution in the Mediterranean (Rempec), jointly administered by the two organizations. UNEP had expressed on July 29 its "serious concerns" about the environmental situation on the Lebanese coast, where nearly 15 tonnes of fuel oil poured into the sea, polluting some 000 kilometers of coast
