The Science Festival in October.

The Science Festival, in October.

There is an annual meeting, important for me curious of all things, it is "The Science Festival"
I go systematically, over the full range of time slots, and all the activities on offer, to grasp the techniques, research science today, and ask questions. It's a bit of a race between labs and conferences, and difficult to take notes and not mix everything up at the end of the day ...
While the doors are open, it is a must to go there, to know the researches about our life and the scope of the public funds allocated to this research.
In 2002, in Orleans, it was the Universality of La source, where I saw the application of plasmas, at Gremi, for industrial pollution control.
In 2003, it was the BRGM, http://www.brgm.fr/ soil mapping, water and mineral studies, pollution control of industrial discharges ...
In 2004, it was INRA, http://www.orleans.inra.fr/LeCentre/leCentre.html
improvement of the plants, safeguarding of the patrimonies, and impact of the diseases and pollutions ...
In 2005, it was at the CNRS, http://www.cnrs-orleans.fr/
huge area, with several disparate poles.
Aerothermal Laboratory http://www.cnrs-orleans.fr/~webaero/
for space engines. And, CNRT, http://www.cnrs-orleans.fr/~webcnrt/
CRMHT, http://crmht.cnrs-orleans.fr/ on high temperatures.
LCSR, http://www.cnrs-orleans.fr/~weblcsr/
combustion, future energies and atmospheric chemistry.
GREMI, http://www.univ-orleans.fr/gremi/
where I could see the extent of lasers and plasmas, for the study, and the manufacture of materials. etc. ...

I would like to point out that all of these researchers are academics, public servants, but that many are foreigners, trainees, students, foreign visitors, low-paid, used for the new gray matter and all the methodical research work.
Missing money in all these advanced fields, where the equipment for the most part, are expensive, are to be built, or reconstituted by the ingenuity of handyman technicians.
Also, these public companies use partnerships, contracts with companies, countries of the world.
When a third party needs for the development of his industrial project, a thorough study that he is not able to lead, he appeals to these highly qualified and paired researchers, for the feasibility of his project. The payment is made by a partnership, patent deposits, and especially by the donation of new devices, necessary for the study of the project.
This is the only way today, to be able to maintain French research at a minimum level ...
This, to understand also, that the main directions of the future, are funded by NASA, manufacturers, car manufacturers, oil companies ... and not, by philanthropists, or the association of "Friends of the Pantone".
This does not prevent researchers from doing their job and having their conscience. But, they do not have the opportunity to develop projects in a different direction from the directive of the client.

It is essential to support public researchers, not to discredit them, because they alone, still have the concern to improve the lives of people and the planet, without fixing exclusively the god cash.

"The Science Festival", vintage 2006.
Many interesting things again.
On the other hand, I met yesterday a researcher teacher of the university (Polytech) and tonight another, very nice because to two people we have retained, 1hour and a half after the closing, yesterday and tonight, to cause much things. This is the first time that I meet "graduates", so kind, responding with pleasure to our questions, with kindness and without superb or language of wood.
Well, where I came across the ass, is that one had his PhD thesis on vegetable oils as fuels from a diesel engine, in 1992, and the other, on esters as fuel on a diesel engine in 1994.
They had done tests on renault 21, and in partnership with John Deere on a Deutz engine.
The agricultural tractor had encouraging results, after pump concerns that were eroding. But when it had to end, the price of a barrel had dropped a lot ...
The ideal was the old engines with "pre-chamber" injection. Problem anyway in the long run this prechamber was filled with soot.
One of the two has tried, more recently, additives, magnets, ionization, and, it is not very conclusive.
He even tried mixing water + diesel + dish soap, it works, but with less efficiency.
The pantone? He did not believe it at all, because he had only seen a report on the tv, where the guy put the probe of the gas controller in the pot, and said, see, it does not pollute anymore, it does not there are more CO2! ...
He too would be ready to do a test with pantone editing if I bring him the necessary elements. He had a petrol engine available.
I told him that a diesel was better, he only has a recent diesel engine on hand ...
Here ! To say that there are some kind and sincere researchers, who like their job, and who do not hesitate to talk about it, beyond their working hours, with little jokers passionate, unskilled. It is true that it is Saturday and Sunday, and that the "Festival of Science" is an open door, for the meeting of a curious and interested audience.
