Freezing Image on global warming

by Christophe » 19/11/06, 15:09

Every Sunday, we are used to watching Arrêt sur Image on France5 which deciphers and analyzes the processing of information by the mainstream media.

Today, hot topic (thank you Hulot ... which was not even mentioned elsewhere), it was to warming to stick to it! Here is a quick summary of the gist of what was said.

Guest lists:
1) Yann Arthus Bertrand (no need to present)
2) Denis Cheissoux (CO2 My Love)
3) Hervé le Treut (Climatologist at CNRS)
4) Sylvestre Huet (Scientific journalist at Liberation)

Program sequence

- Treatment of the hundreds of Iceberg drifting off New Zealand: for some (TF1) it is warming, for others (FR2) it is not then it is ... since the phenomenon was already noted in 1930 ...

- The inconvenient truth: "shock" images (too much?) Of rising oceans. Comparison with the exhibition of the city of science in 2003, which transformed Paris into a Venice ...

: Arrow: in both cases it is largely exaggerated ... There will be much more "worrying" catastrophes and well before the ocean rises ...

- Comparison of rainfall "senario" in France in 2100.

Large contradiction between the results of the CNRS and Météo France (Arpège project), for the first large drop in precipitation, for the second almost no difference.

: Arrow: that to conclude apart from the fact that nobody knows anything about it finally and that all this remains theories ...

- A guest says an important thing: "The enemy is invisible and we are all responsible" So it is very difficult to "fight" him

- Comparison kilimanjaro in 30 years. 80% of the snow surface has disappeared

: Arrow: the phenomenon alone would not be significant for global warming because it is cyclical

- The Truet: man increases by 1000 times the speed of global warming (of course: there is warming due to factors other than man)

- Huet: what is happening now is insignificant compared to what awaits us after 2050

- The Truet: we are more and more certain of the responsibility of man ... (but some still doubt ...)

- Cheissoux: we must stop "consuming without limit", quotation of ecological gestures: 25% of urban journeys = less than 1km, unnecessary packaging ... he ends up: "it is common sense"

: Arrow: Bravo Cheissoux!

- Example of the polar bear, skinny and drowning bears which no longer find "enough" sea ice ...

- Evocation of the 5500 billion of the cost of warming in 2100: for Huet this figure means absolutely nothing and is underestimated. "What is the life of a human being"

- Cheissoux: we all have an "unlimited" credit card for our energy consumption (in other words: we do not pay for the pollution of our energies). Example of yogurt, all of the ingredients of which have, in aggregate, traveled 9000 km before arriving on your table. (evocation of gray energy)

- Conclusion by Abiker (columnist):

He compares the treatment of the greenhouse effect by some media to religious belief ... That scientific results are treated as religious parables, that there are heretics of warming (in one direction as in the other) , predictions of the biblical apocalypse ... etc etc

: Arrow: Uh ... if current scientific findings are a "belief" I don't know what Abiker calls "scientific fact" ...
but I may not have understood everything there ...

- Arthus Bertrand answers him precisely: some have become aware (faith) of the warming and others not ... yet ...
