On the contrary, oysters and mussels inside the basin remain consumable.

The oyster samples were taken on Monday and the water analyzes also revealed a significant presence of dinophysis, a toxic algae, the prefecture said in a press release.

The ban can only be lifted when two consecutive biological analyzes "have not turned out to be negative", one adds.

The next samples will be taken on August 14 and August 17, and the results will be known on the 19th.

The oyster farmers of the Arcachon basin are contesting the validity of the "mouse test" which has been the source of several bans for five years, including many since the beginning of May.

They are waiting for another protocol that the French authorities have undertaken to obtain from Brussels.

The Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Bruno Le Maire, has obtained a first European scientific conference on the subject to be held on September 10.
