Ozone peaks: the alert threshold exceeded in eight places
The ozone alert threshold was exceeded on Thursday in Belgium in eight different measurement locations: six are located in Flanders and two in Brussels. The highest ozone concentration was measured in Schoten (Antwerp), with 194 micrograms per cubic meter, said Thursday evening the Interregional Environment Cell (CELINE) on its website.
The ozone alert threshold, set by a European standard, is 180 micrograms per cubic meter. The population must be informed of the ozone concentrations above this threshold. Sensitive groups, such as the elderly and children, are advised not to make any thoughtless efforts during ozone spikes. The highest concentration was measured at 19:00 p.m. in Schoten (194), down to 171 micrograms per cubic meter an hour later. Other exceedances of the alert threshold were observed in Houtem (191), Borgerhout (188), Destelbergen (184), Ghent and Moerkerke (181 in the latter two cases). It was also exceeded in the Brussels Region, at Berchem-Sainte-Agathe (185) and Uccle (181). The Interregional Environment Cell expects other significant concentrations of ozone on Friday with, locally, exceedances of the alert threshold. Cloudiness and possible thunderstorms will reduce the risk of overshoot. (CYA)
