An automobile initiative: car sharing

An interesting initiative

Car sharing, another way to get around, wants to gain ground

PARIS (AFP) - Car-sharing, another way of transporting by car, more economical for short trips and more respectful of the environment, mobilized public partners on Monday to gain ground.
A charter was signed in the Senate by the ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency) and the Gart (Grouping of authorities responsible for transport) to define this mode of travel stemming from private initiatives but which needs public support to develop.
The sharing of the same car by several successive people, born in German-speaking Switzerland before quickly emigrating to northern Europe and the United States, arrived in Paris in 1999 with "Caisse Commune". This company was created by Loïc Mignotte for ecological reasons and because "the car is used wrongly and through".

"To go out in the evening, go shopping, visit your family-in-law on Sunday, it is not necessary to have a car whose fixed cost is between 400 and 600 euros per month. with others ", argues Loïc Mignotte.

Thanks to the support of Ademe, "Caisse Commune" has equipped itself with ten vehicles accessible 24 hours a day and 24 days a week for a duration varying on average from one hour to 7 hours, with a membership of 7 euros per month. Today, the fleet amounts to 24 vehicles and there are 12 subscribers in Paris.

The reservation of a car is done by phone or internet and the vehicle is collected in the minutes which follow at one of the eight stations scattered in car parks of the City of Paris, which supports the operation by granting spaces at a preferential rate .

With a card and a secret code, the subscriber collects the vehicle key in a terminal as he would a DVD in a vending machine and returns it to the same place. His time is calculated by the electronic chip on his card.

The rate is 1,99 euros per hour during the day (free at night) to which is added 0,21 cents per kilometer. "It is cheaper than a taxi for a race of more than 10 km, more flexible than a traditional rental company which does not operate on a half-day or hourly basis," explains Loïc Mignotte.

And this gives 56% of Parisians who do not own a car the possibility of having one for one-off use, dissuades some from buying one, avoids pollution of 1.290 tonnes of CO2 per year and saves 451 tonnes of oil equivalent . 30% of subscribers would have a car if they did not adhere to car sharing.

"At the beginning, the clientele was green, then the sores arrived, people who have the advantage of innovating, and now it is as much the grandmother who wants to take out her grandchildren, as the restaurant owner who will to Rungis or the student. It fits into the customs, "says Loïc Mignotte.

The major French cities (Marseille, Strasbourg, Lyon, Grenoble) followed the Parisian example but on a smaller scale. A project should see the light of day in early 2006 in Aix-Les-Bains and Chambery. The Nantes agglomeration plans to include this alternative in its Urban Travel Plan and that of Nancy to replace a dozen service cars by car sharing.

Loïc Mignotte expects the charter, signed on Monday and whose recommendations are addressed to local authorities, to "give new life to this activity". The very large parking budget (25% of turnover) could be reduced by public-private partnerships.

Democratizing the process is necessarily a good initiative

Simple ideas work best :D

Yes obviously .... but apparently it's not as democratized as that ... to believe the sales figures of car manufacturers ...

There was a report on the JT of FR2 at 13 p.m. above (just after a report on the Gulf Stream) ... They are unleashed journalists at the moment ... And that's good!

Should develop a network of covered routes with treadmills for the climbs, I am convinced that many people would take out their rollerskates, bikes, or equip themselves with them :)

It would be cool for the homeless too!

Well, it seems to me that I talked about this (briefly) in this study:
https://www.econologie.com/articles.php?lng=fr&pg=27

Well, apparently roller skates are not at all fashionable ... sales have dropped ... without real explanations ... except the fact that people are equipped and that a roller skate doesn't wear out until it...

It's not just sales that have dropped to explain this disaffection with rollerblading. :D
