"Homemade" and eco-friendly cleaning products: Nantes hospital takes the plunge

PARIS, 9 January 2014 (Direct Hospital) - The cleaning service of the Hôtel-Dieu de Nantes has installed a machine that, by electrolysis, manufactures cleaning products from water and salt. It facilitates the work of the agents, avoids toxic discharges and allows the hospital to realize significant savings.

This machine, the size of a large refrigerator, was installed in June 2013 in the premises of the Hotel Dieu. It turns previously softened water into a disinfectant and detergent that does it all.

"These two products replace eight of the twelve products used by our teams: neutral detergents, surface detergents and disinfectants, sanitary descaler, scouring cream, product for windows, etc.", explains Stéphane Baudoux. , in charge of the premises maintenance process. The four non-substitutable products are those which are subject to specific standards for the health sector and which are made from alcohol, to save drying time.

Stéphane Baudoux discovered this process in a specialized journal and worked for two years on its implementation at the Nantes University Hospital. "This device is still little known and little used, we are among the pioneers", he explains. During his research, he visited the Percy Army Training Hospital in Clamart, where this process is used, as well as companies in the service sector.

The machine installed in Nantes was developed and manufactured by the French company Cleanea. Very easy to use, it electrolytically transforms the molecular structure of salt water into hypochlorous acid and sodium hydroxide solution. Agents only have to open the valve corresponding to the product they want to use.

Taking into account the price of water and energy, the final cost of cleaning products is halved, at 1,5 cents per liter instead of 3 cents. In six months of use, the cleaning service has saved 6.000 euros on the purchase of products, announces Stéphane Baudoux.

The machine, costing 21.000 euros, should therefore be amortized more quickly than expected. "According to my calculations, the investment was to be amortized in four years ... but it could take only 2 or 3 years," said the manager. The machine has a known lifespan of ten years, he adds.

Beyond the savings, these first six months of testing have allowed the hospital to ensure that the products are effective and leave no traces or biofilm. A study will now be carried out with the infectious risk management unit of the hospital in order to define the hypochlorous acid disinfectant panel. "This has been done in the United States, with good results, but we want to make sure for ourselves before using it in care units", explains Stéphane Baudoux.

Another advantage of the device: agents use according to their needs, while current products must be diluted in at least eight liters of water, regardless of the amount needed. The trolleys are therefore lighter. Agents also appreciate that these products do not attack the skin.

For the moment, the only machine installed at the Hôtel-Dieu is used by the team for cleaning 25.000 m² of floors. With a production capacity of 60 liters per hour, it would take 19 to fully meet the needs of the CHU. "The configuration of the premises - with many small cleaning rooms - prevents us from installing them, but as part of the construction of the future hospital, we are considering the possibility of centralizing the production of products and delivering them everywhere with a network specific piping ", indicates the manager. / mb

Interesting is the "cleaning" version of salt electrolysis, well known in the world of swimming pools for a few years!

Thank you for the information!
