Greenpeace attacks HP's headquarters with eco-tags

by recyclinage » 30/07/09, 11:36

In parallel with the communication established with its quarterly list of the most environmentally friendly manufacturers, Greenpeace is trying a new approach: green-activist graffiti. A handful of members of this environmental protection organization on Tuesday took over the headquarters of Hewlett-Packard (HP) in Palo Alto, California, to paint, in giant letters, the words "Hazardous Products" (dangerous products, with the initials of HP) on the roof of the building. Objective: to remind the world's number one computer manufacturer of its commitments to protecting the environment.

According to Greenpeace, HP had indeed announced in 2007 that in 2009 it would stop including in the manufacture of its machines certain environmentally hazardous materials, such as brominated flame retardants or PVC. This measure would have finally been postponed from 2009 to 2011.

The organization would also have broadcast by an automaton a voice message recorded by actor William Shatner (Captain Kirk of the Star Trek series) to all telephone sets in the building. He calls on the employees of the firm to put pressure on their leaders so that the firm follows the path taken by other companies such as Apple.

Greenpeace is used to this kind of punching action. Since 2006, the organization regularly invests in major events related to new technologies, in order to denounce the sector's lack of consideration for ecological issues. Here, she promises to have used a non-polluting paint: morals are safe.
