It's all in the title: in your opinion why is Open Source massively and historically used in computing and software and so little used in the development of real "products"? That is to say, manufactured products? An answer, cold, is perhaps in the question: because it is necessary to manufacture them therefore to have the manufacturing tool? What turns off large number of project or user?
This changes a little with the 3D printer: many models of objects (potentially manufacturers) are given for free so it's a kind of open sourcing ...
Software patents exist, however, and at the time of the first, they were the object of some criticism ...
Industrial patents have never been criticized ...
