Spain's Iberdrola has announced completion of construction of the 500MW Núñez de Balboa solar farm project in the country's western region of Extremadura.

Comprised of 1,430,000 solar panels, 115 central inverters and two substations, start-up and energising tests have begun and Iberdrola says commercial energy production should begin in the first quarter of 2020.

The Núñez de Balboa project covers an area of ​​nearly 1,000 hectares and will produce an estimated 832 GWh of clean electricity annually, while avoiding avoid 215,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. The facility will supply electricity to clients in banking, telecommunications and retail sectors under power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Iberdrola states it completed construction of the massive solar power station in record time - just 12 months.

The company has bigger plans for Spain, with the installation of another 3,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2022 and Extremadura at the center of its strategy. Impressive indeed. There is no doubt about the progression of PV in Spain in the short term, despite a completely failed start around 2006/2007, which completely sealed the sector for 10 years.

Trump administration says it will approve largest US solar farm

Federal officials plan to approve a massive solar farm with energy storage in the desert outside Las Vegas, paving the way for a $ 1-billion project that will provide electricity to Nevada residents served by billionaire Warren Buffett's NV Energy.

At 690 megawatts across 7,100 acres, the facility would generate more power than the largest solar farm currently operating in the United States, a 579-megawatt plant in Southern California. The Bureau of Land Management published the final environmental analysis for another large Riverside County solar project, Desert Quartzite, in September, but has not yet issued an official “record of decision.”

The Gemini project “would represent a significant increase in renewable energy capacity for Nevada and the West,” Tim Smith, the bureau's district manager for southern Nevada, said in a recent news release, when the project's draft environmental analysis was released.

The Gemini project is being developed by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners and Arevia Power, and is expected to be fully operational by Dec. 1, 2023. It will be built along Interstate 15 about 30 miles northeast of Las Vegas, near two large solar farms that are already operating on the other side of the freeway.

Acciona has commissioned a 54.2MW / 62MWp PV plant in the Atacama desert, bringing its total renewables operating capacity in Chile to 536MW.

The Almeyda plant, which is capable of producing 167.5GWh annually, is the developer's second PV project in the country after the 246MWp El Romero solar plant.

Almeyda is contracted to supply power to Chile's state-owned copper mining company through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA).

The start-up of the facility alongside a new 183MW wind farm has increased Acciona's operating capacity by 84% in Chile, according to the firm.

Spanish energy giant Iberdrola has commissioned the largest PV plant in Europe - the 500 MW Núñez de Balboa project - following the completion of construction in December 2019.

The € 300 million project, which went into operation on Monday, is located between the municipalities of Usagre, Hinojosa del Valle, and Bienvenida, in southern Spain's Extremadura region. Iberdrola developed it in partnership with local power provider Ecoenergías del Guadiana. It features 1,430,000 solar panels, 115 central inverters, and two substations.

Iberdrola managed to secure green financing from the European Investment Bank and Spain's Official Credit Institute. It signed a PPA with Uvesco (BM Supermarcados) covering 391 MW of the project's total capacity in November 2018, following the finalization of an initial PPA that it signed with financial services provider Kutxabank in July, in addition to another one signed in mid-October with telecoms service provider Euskaltel, which is based in Basque Country.

Iberdrola plans to install 3 GW of solar until 2022, of which 2 GW will be located in Extremadura. By 2030, the company aims to deploy approximately 10 GW. In June, it revealed plans to build two installations with a total capacity of 800 MW of solar near Cuenca, in Spain's central-southern region of Castilla-La Mancha.

Abu Dhabi solar project of 2 GW seals PPA at record-low tariff

July 27 (Renewables Now) - The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the 2-GW Al Dhafra solar project in the UAE at a record-low tariff of AED 0.0497 (USD 0.0135 / EUR 0.0116) per kWh.

The project was won by a consortium comprising diversified utilities and energy group Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) and renewables developer Masdar with a combined 60% stake, as well as France's EDF SA (EPA: EDF) and China's Jinko Power Technology Co Ltd holding the remaining 40% in equal stakes. A shareholders' agreement between the parties was inked alongside the 30-year PPA.

The photovoltaic (PV) power plant will be built about 35 km from Abu Dhabi City. It will be the first solar park on such scale to deploy bifacial module technology.

The project partners expect to reach financial close in the third quarter of 2020, start construction later this year and achieve initial power generation in the first half of 2022.

Once fully up and running later that year, the plant will increase Abu Dhabi's solar power capacity to around 3.2 GW. The facility will be larger than what is currently the world's biggest operational single-project solar PV plant, namely the Noor Abu Dhabi of 1.2 GW.

Iberdrola unveils plans for 'Europe's largest' solar-storage-hydrogen project

Iberdrola is to develop a landmark solar-storage-hydrogen facility in central Spain, professing it to be largest industrial green hydrogen facility in Europe once complete.

The utility has partnered with fertilizer producer Fertiberia to develop the plant which will pair 100MW of solar PV, a 20MWh lithium-ion battery system and a 20MW electrolyser, itself aimed at being one of the largest electrolytic hydrogen production systems in the world.

Both parties have penned an agreement to develop the project, triggering an investment of € 150 million (US $ 175 million), and the project is due to come onstream in 2021.

Hydrogen produced at the facility will be used at Fertiberia's ammonia plant in Puertollano. As a result, the company will be able to reduce its natural gas demand by more than 10%.

It marks Iberdrola's first major move into the nascent green hydrogen arena and Ignacio Galán, chairman at Iberdrola, said the initiative “shows the path and opportunities offered by the energy transition to develop innovative projects as the focus for industrialization and employment in our country.”

Green hydrogen has emerged throughout 2020 as a particularly prominent trend driven by the need of deeper decarbonization by established economies. By pairing utility-scale electrolysers with renewables, hydrogen for use in heavy industry, transport and heating can be produced without the emissions currently associated with so-called 'blue' or 'gray' hydrogen.

China has completed the construction of China's largest solar park with 2.2 GW and takes the place of the second largest solar park in the world.

Huanghe Hydropower Development connected its photovoltaic park of 2.2 GW to the grid. The second-biggest solar power plant in the world is located in Qinghai, China, and includes an energy storage system of 202.9 MW supplied by domestic company Sungrow. It is part of a giant renewables project, which is planned to reach 16 GW.

Huanghe Hydropower Development built a 2.2 GW solar power park in the northwest of China. On the global level, it only trails India's Bhadla solar park, which has a slightly larger capacity. The new facility was installed in Qinghai with inverter solutions provider Sungrow's 202.9 MW storage system that has the capacity of one hour, translating to 202.9 MWh.

The project includes an 800 kV power line of almost 1,600 kilometers for the transmission of the electricity to the east. The largest solar power plant in China, which reportedly costs USD 2.2 billion, is part of a planned 16 GW renewable power complex.

PVH Corp, the owner of clothing brands Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, has announced the installation of what it says is the “world's most powerful” rooftop solar facility at its warehouse in Venlo, the Netherlands.

The 18MWp capacity project features more than 48,000 solar panels that will fully cover the site's electricity footprint as well as indirectly provide all energy for PVH Europe's warehouses, offices and stores in the Netherlands.

The facility was installed by IZEN, a Belgian solar developer that was acquired by VINCI Energies last year.

Martijn Hagman, CEO of Tommy Hilfiger Global and PVH Europe, said the development represents a “huge stride” in the company's commitment to be powered by 100% renewable electricity by 2030 as well as achieve a 30% reduction in supply chain carbon emissions by the same year.

Announcement of the project comes a week after Amazon completed a 3.4MW rooftop solar system featuring 11,500 solar panels at its fulfillment center in Tilbury, the UK.
