SolaRoad, the solar cycle path in the Netherlands

by Christophe » 14/05/15, 13:13

I have a little trouble grasping the concept, but I'm still passing you the info: it's been 6 months that the Netherlands has been experimenting with a solar cycle path.
We all know that the Netherlands lack building space but all the same, what is the point of putting solar panels there there is regular darkening?

Besides, electricity production is low: 70 kWh / m².year compared to a conventional photovoltaic installation which gives between 120 and 160 kWh / m².year! Erratum, thank you.

As part of an experimentation phase in real conditions of use, 70 meters of a cycle path located in the Dutch town of Krommenie were covered with a solar energy production device: concrete slabs equipped of solar cells, covered with a layer of transparent glass one centimeter thick and with a non-slip coating. It was the first solar road to be commissioned in the world.

The results measured during this experimental phase, which saw more than 150.000 cyclists march, go far beyond SolaRoad's expectations: the 70-meter section has indeed generated some 3.000 kWh of electricity in 6 months. A volume of energy large enough to cover the annual electrical needs of a person's home.

It's not
"a classic photovoltaic installation which gives between 800 and 1200 kWh / m².year!"
but only the total annual energy sent by the real sun to northern France, and photovoltaics gives only 17% of that at most !!

"The annual global horizontal solar irradiation (IGH) in France is on average 1 kWh / m²; this annual average varies from 274 kWh / m² in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur to 1 kWh / m² in North -Pas-de-Calais "

Oops yes sorry I was wrong ... I will rectify thank you!

It does not prevent this solar cycle path is rubbish econologically speaking ...

We can thus cover all the renovated parking lots !!

The car parks or the roofs of the car parks?

Because a parking lot with a car on it for 8 hours a day ... it's not that good at sunshine : Cheesy:

Finally, the Grand Groupe coup de cœur prize rewards Colas for "Wattway, the world's first photovoltaic road".
Wattway cladding panels include photovoltaic cells embedded in a multilayer substrate. These cells capture solar energy through a very thin sheet of polycrystalline silicon used to generate electricity. Wattway will thus supply public lighting, illuminated signs, trams, but also housing, offices, etc. For example, 20 m² of Wattway floor space is enough to supply a fireplace with electricity (excluding heating).

Half of the maximum possible, under thick sturdy glass, in the Netherlands less sunny than in PACA is very satisfactory !!!
