Joking aside, most of the time the stoves are installed "haphazardly" and only imperfectly heat the homes, while their integration should be planned from the start and the house "built around" ... I saw a farmhouse whose stove was at one end, in a gable, and which overheated in vain ... Thermal insulation also plays an important role in the regulation and distribution of heat.

I knew a person, born in eastern France, who had a mass stove at home (about 1 ton of memory).
He stayed warm all night, consuming very little.
On the other hand, you have to cut the wood into small logs, because the fireplace is small.

Otherwise, a friend of my father's has a very powerful stove that consumes little, like this:

Yes, it heats up a lot, but little inertia.
When I lived on an old farm in the 04 to 24 years old, I bought myself this Jotul cast iron stove, excellent Scandinavian, and you can cook on it:
