One billion euros to model the human brain
The Human Brain Project (HBP), an ambitious program aimed at fully modeling the human brain on a computer, was awarded one of two five hundred million euro scholarships awarded on January 28, 2013 by the European Commission. as part of an international competition. Conditioned to the payment of a similar sum by the States or the industry during the next ten years, the HBP is now virtually at the head of a budget of one billion euros.
Of the 21 laboratories competing in the Future and Emerging Technologies Flagships (FET) challenge organized by the European Commission, there could only be two winners. It's now official: one of them will be the Human Brain project (HBP), coordinated by Professor Henry Markram of the Federal Polytechnic of Lausanne (Switzerland).
Allodocteurs.fr had already presented you this impressive program, intended to bring together 83 organizations in 23 countries, including 16 European, around an idea worthy of a science fiction novel: achieve by 2023 the computer simulation of the set of existing interactions between the 100 billion neurons that make up the human brain. In addition to direct applications in neuroscience and medicine, BPH could revolutionize the way computer systems are imagined and designed.
In the coming months, the various BPH partners will negotiate a detailed agreement with the Community for a first launch phase of two and a half years (2013 to mid-2016). A first payment of 54 million will be made during 2013.
In total, depending on the EU's multiannual budget for 2014-2020, the HBP may receive up to 500 million euros from European funds over a period of ten years, provided that the States or industry co-finance at the same height.
The second winner of the FET grant is a project to identify the properties of graphene, a recently discovered material, which is both conductive, flexible and resistant. Graphene structures could in particular find applications in medicine and optics, for example with the creation of artificial retinas.
