Cargill Purchases Zelp Cattle Burp Methane Capture Masks!

by Christophe » 10/06/21, 09:56

Uh ... I have the impression that in 2021 almost every day has its new April 1 ... and the anal version is when?

The only good info in this article is the conclusion ...

Capture (and "neutralize in CO2") methane from cows burping

Not long ago, we presented a report from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) on possible solutions to combat methane (CH4) emissions. Among the three major sources of emissions, we find agriculture (40%), the most important. In this area, emanations from cattle come out on top, followed by those from rice cultivation. Flatulence, but also animal burping, in fact emits methane into the atmosphere.

As Bloomberg explains in an article from June 1, 2021, the Cargill company wants to market from next year a mask capable of filtering the burps of cattle. At the origin of these masks currently in the testing phase, there is the British start-up Zelp for Zero Emissions Livestock Project.

Far from being simple gadgets, these solar powered masks are real filtering devices. They take the form of a harness with a muffler covering the nostrils of the animals. According to the start-up, this filtering system is able to capture more than half of the methane that cows emit when they belch.

A short-term solution

In addition to its astonishing nature, this device has a peculiarity that could raise questions. Indeed, this type of mask incorporates a filter which, once saturated, triggers a chain reaction. Methane is transformed into CO2 before being released into the ambient air. To justify this, Cargill and Zelp point out that the heating power of methane is much greater than that of CO2 (twenty-five times more!). However, it should also be noted that the lifespan of methane in the atmosphere is only twelve years against about a century for CO2.

Does swapping one greenhouse gas for another represent a real solution? If this kind of device could be useful, it would only be a short-term solution. In its recent report, UNEP offers a more concrete vision: make changes in the human diet. Indeed, by consuming less meat and other dairy products, positive impacts on methane emissions from livestock will be visible and above all sustainable.

The best would still be to store it and sell it for the car to Guy .... Rather than burning it unnecessarily ...

For the guy I can see ... because he is in no hurry ... a cowboy roteurs farters!

The cow carriage with LNG recycling in the passenger compartment (heating) or for a turbo on a small heat engine (because a cow is not so diligent) .... : Cheesy: : Cheesy: : Cheesy:

Guy Lagaffe's carriage, what! : Cheesy:
