CARBUROL plan and Hervé plan, biofuels from the 80s

Carburol plan and Hervé plan, it shouldn’t say much to most of us (the youngest at least).

These are 2 major plans (very, too much, ambitious) of biofuel development launched by the French government in the early 80s following the 2 oil crises.

Here is an excerpt from this book that I am reading.

Unfortunately, he only mentions biofuels "politically" (should I say: petroleum? Take a new neologism) correct, ie: ethanol, ETBE and EMVH (diester). However, we will appreciate the many times the authors (4 women academics) mention the diversification of the energy supply and above all energy conservation.

If the subject of official biofuels interests you, it's a bible: http://www.eyrolles.com/Sciences/Livre/ ... angent.php

I learned there, for example, that there was more bioethanol produced in 1913 than in the 1950s and that its production for energy or process destination (manufacture of explosives) never stopped between 1910 and the years 1960 when oil floods the market abundantly and inexpensively.

For example in the 50s Antar had developed the TRI SUPER AZUR 75% petrol, 15% ethanol and 10% benzol abandoned for economic reasons in the 60s.

But back to CARBUROL, here is the extract from the book:

Announced on January 14, 1981 by the government, it aims to find products of national origin substitutable for Hydrocarbons. This program is ambitious and has nothing to do with the statements that the French political and administrative authorities had prepared for many months. The aim is to produce 50% of the fuels used by transport in national territory in 1990. (!!!) The Minister of Industry at the time did not hesitate to speak of 2 million ha devoted to energy production out of the 32 million ha cultivable.

Like what we look for solutions only when we are in the limelight (oil crisis here) and once we get out everything goes into oblivion.

Yes Matt! What we wanted to show via this topic is for the moment (wait for the rest):

a) the whole ramof of biofuels is far from recent!

b) techniques (bettrave ethanol) have therefore been mastered for almost 100 years! We know their limits but we did not hesitate to relaunch the same quickly without innovation ... (current ethanol biofuel)

c) a solution does not appear becauseit is good but when the economic conditions are favorable to its development.

d) if the economic situation changes, technology can be put back in the drawers as quickly (or almost) as it came out

e) the weight of politicians in technological decisions can weigh heavy and even if they are wrong. Often politicians are under pressure from lobbies. Currently the lobby of large farmers wanting to develop an energy sector because of various crises in the profession ...
