Algae to the rescue of the planet


OSLO (Verified source) - How to produce more energy while controlling CO2 emissions? Some researchers believe they can unravel this puzzle with an unexpected ally: tiny algae.

Thanks to their natural properties, microalgae have great climatic virtues because they are greedy in carbon dioxide, and energetic because they are also rich in lipids usable to produce biodiesel.

"This is certainly one of the most exciting and revolutionary avenues in the fight against climate change and meeting energy needs," said Frederic Hauge, president of the Norwegian environmental organization Bellona, ​​one of the lawyers of the concept.

The idea consists in diverting the exhaust fumes from polluting installations, coal-fired power stations or factories, and injecting them with water into "photobioreactors", large transparent tubes containing algae which feed on the following gas the principle of photosynthesis.

It has been successfully tested by the prestigious MIT. After passing through a seaweed broth, the fumes from its cogeneration plant came out purged, depending on the sunshine, of 50 to 82% of their CO2 and 85% of their nitrogen oxides (NOx), having an impact important on the greenhouse effect.

Extracted from the tubes, microalgae can be buried or released in the seabed, trapping their CO2 indefinitely.

Applied to biomass power plants powered by plants grown in the open air and fed with CO2 present in the atmosphere, the method would have a carbon balance ... negative: it would make it possible to remove more CO2 than that released by cultivation, transport and the burning of plants.

Unusual equation, an increased consumption of energy would therefore lead to a reduction in greenhouse gases (GHG), incriminated in global warming.

"Watching TV, vacuuming or driving your electric car to visit family and friends would help remove CO2 from the atmosphere," says Frederic Hauge.

Rather than being stored, the algae can be pressed to make biodiesel, an attractive alternative for air transport for example.

The CO2 contained in biodiesel will certainly be released into the atmosphere but it will have had a double energy utility, first in the factory and then in the airplane's reactor.

After pressing, algae residues can also become mineral fertilizers.

"We kill three birds with one stone. Algae are used both to filter CO2 from industrial sites, to produce energy and to agriculture," explains Frederic Hauge.

Compared to first-generation biofuels, which are very controversial because they cut back on food crops (sunflower, rapeseed, beet, wheat or corn), algae have the great advantage of not encroaching on agricultural land and being cultivable throughout of the year.

They also have higher yields than terrestrial oilseed species.

"To meet America's fuel needs with biodiesel extracted from the most efficient land plant, palm oil, 48% of the country's agricultural land would have to be used," researchers from the Norwegian Climate Research Center said recently. (Cicero) in the publication Klima.

“The United States could potentially replace all of its petroleum-based automotive fuels by growing microalgae in an area equivalent to 5% of the country's agricultural land, on land that, moreover, would not need to be. cultivable, ”they added.
