A film to improve the diffusion of LED light

New in LED technology

The Technological and Industrial Research Institute (ITRI) recently introduced two new types of light emitting diodes (LEDs) with improved capabilities such as better color rendering and better light distribution.

The first LED is made up of a brightness enhanced film BEF. This film can withstand a temperature of 150 degrees Celsius and provides 20% higher brightness compared to existing films thanks to a nano-structure that deflects light in multiple directions, preventing it from converging on a single point. . In addition, this LED diffuses the light uniformly, thus avoiding glare phenomena.

This film was developed specifically to cover LEDs, including lamps used in galleries, office lamps and public lighting. Tests were performed on an MR16 lamp (compact fluorescent or LED lamp) with or without the film. Without, the luminosity measured at the focal point was 2280 lux, but it increased to 1250 lux after applying the film. Around this point, the measured average was 193 lux without film and 242 lux with.

This film is one of the examples which would allow a drop in power consumption while having the same brightness. This technology was awarded the gold medal at the 2007 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions.

The second technology makes it possible to obtain a color rendering very close to natural light by giving LED lamps a wide color temperature spectrum, from cold white to warm white. The resulting color rendering is close to 80% of natural light and the goal is to soon reach 90%.
