Re: Inter-season water storage "basins" to fight against droughts...
It's simple, obvious, effective.
I water my trees, shrubs, vegetable garden (tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, etc.) with recycled PVC tubes (cut and cut) driven into the ground near the plants. Diameter from 40 to 100mn depending on the plants.
And it has worked for several years. Very little water consumption (no evaporation, runoff). It does not water the surrounding weeds. The deep reserve lasts for several days. And you can water during the day.

It's pretty cheap, I find (even more so with salvage, of course):

AD44, can you give more details?
The size of the pipe, you can specify how and the utility.
I assume the notches are made with a XNUMX mm kerf like for a well.
No soil inside? Are you covering the tip?
Or do you make a pilot hole and place your pvc in it?
You put a cap on it

Like that.
There are plenty of tutorials on the net.
The length of the tubes is according to what I find in my falls. Between 20 and 30cm. The diameter is more like 40 for vegetable garden plants and more like 80 or 100 for young trees.
I place two or three pebbles at the bottom as well as on the notch to limit the entry of soil (although it doesn't really fall in).

Re: Inter-season water storage "basins" to fight against droughts...
Drip irrigation solves only part of the problem: the water supply to the plants. Spraying, much more resource-intensive, is however often necessary to combat excessive temperatures, which an underground supply cannot do. At the level of a garden, a shade house could also play this role, but represents another constraint...

Re: Inter-season water storage "basins" to fight against droughts...
it needs a flow punctual and intermittent on the leaves.
We water them for 1 minute, then let them evaporate for several minutes.
I practice this with my OPALE and the cooling is very intense with little water.
Indeed, the evaporation of the water draws off a heat of 330 kJ/L.
It is the same principle as perspiration in humans.

Re: Inter-season water storage "basins" to fight against droughts...
This question of cooling only arises during the hottest hours of the day and during the only heat peaks of the summer season, which limits interventions, but complicates them logistically, whether due to drench* (the operation described Remundo above) or shadehouses...

watering still requires a water tank...

Watering requires water, but there are still possibilities in the choice of crops to reduce this constraint, which could be reflected in agricultural policy.
Some exotic varieties would spontaneously resist heat, but remain difficult to acclimatize because of their sensitivity to other factors of our climates...
