Lyon acquires a 34 MW biomass boiler

VINCENT CHARBONNIER Usine Nouvelle on 12/04/2019

45 million euros were invested in the new biomass boiler in Lyon (Rhône) by Dalkia, with the support of the Ademe heat fund. Its power will be increased by a third in 2023.

The Lyon district heating network serves the equivalent of 45 homes

The first urban biomass boiler in France was inaugurated in Lyon (Rhône) on April 11. This equipment produced in eighteen months represents an investment of 45 million euros financed by Dalkia and by the heat fund of the Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe) up to 17,7 millions of euros. This boiler room includes two boilers of 17 megawatts each. A third of equivalent power will be installed in 2023.

The wood used comes from wood chips and sawmill scraps collected within a 90 km radius around Lyon and stored in a 6 m000 silo corresponding to four days of production. 3 tonnes of wood will be needed each year to supply the Lyon boiler room. This uses the technology of the bubbling fluidized sand bed to transform biomass into heat, with a combustion efficiency of 75% by integrating the recovery of calories in the fumes.

Network expansion

The Surville site, where the boiler room is located, also houses a control center for the entire metropolitan heating network. It monitors the various heat and cold production sites as well as the pipes and enables action to be taken on the 600 substations scattered throughout the city, all of which have been renovated.

The Lyon heating network serves the equivalent of 45 homes. This will be three times more in 000. By then, 2027 km of hot network and 65 km of cold network will be created. Overall, 4,5 million euros will have been invested in the Lyon network, which has been extended to the city of Bron and the Confluence district with a pipeline under the Pasteur bridge to cross the Rhône. The Part-Dieu district is also served by the Gerland boiler room.

The new Surville boiler room is part of the public service delegation contract for the urban heating and cooling network concluded between the metropolitan area of Lyon and Dalkia in January 2017.

Green energy record for the Grenoble district heating network

End of July 2019 enerzine

It is a new record which constitutes a first at the national level for a network of this scope: for the 2018-2019 season, the Heating Company, local energy operator, announces that the milestone of 70% of renewable energies and recovery of the energy mix has been exceeded.

In nearly 60 years, the district heating network has grown from 0% to more than 70% renewable and recovered energy (EnR & R), while multiplying by 30 the heat distributed to its customers. More ambitious than the national objectives, the heating network is more efficient than the national average with 71% of renewable and recovered energies against 56% at the national level [1] and aims for 100% in 2033. Decisive results to maintain one step ahead and help make Grenoble an exemplary European green capital. This greening has made it possible to reduce its CO2 emissions by nearly 60% since 1990, while the European objective sets a reduction of 20% by 2020.

This performance is the result of a combination of several factors: optimized production tools on all sites; limited use of fossil fuels; the integration of a new energy source thanks to the connection to the Pont-de-Claix chemical platform to recover part of their energy production; increasing the share of wood energy at the expense of fossil fuels.

The heating network that burned coal and heavy fuel oil when it first started in 1960, has now gone green.

As the first renewable energy in the network, wood energy contributes significantly to the energy transition in which our territory is involved. The Heating Company develops and structures its wood supply chain, in partnership with industry players, who have long been aware of the multiple challenges of the forest.

Today, biomass not only makes it possible to exceed 50% of ENR & R in the energy balance of the district heating network, which allows a reduced VAT rate for users, but also has the advantage of being local. The wood used as fuel for the heating network is supplied within a radius of 100 km around Grenoble. The Heating Company therefore limits journeys by purchasing locally.

100 tonnes of wood have allowed this season to heat the equivalent of nearly 000 homes in the metropolitan area and save approximately 30 tonnes of C000 compared to coal, the original fuel for district heating or 117. tonnes of CO000 compared to Natural Gas. These avoided emissions correspond to the equivalent of the annual CO02 emissions of nearly 70 cars, covering 000 km / year with an emission rate of 2g / km.

A new biomass plant, "BIOMAX", located on the Scientific Peninsula will soon be commissioned (March 2020). In total, nearly 150 tonnes of wood will then be used as heat, ie more than 000% of the energy produced by the Heating Company, which will make it possible to exceed 30% of ENR & R. The tonnage of wood has more than quintupled in 75 years, going from 15 tonnes in 19 to this new record of 100 tonnes for the 2004-100 heating season.

60 million euros in loans raised from the EIB, Crédit Lyonnais and Banque Postale to support the development of this ecologically virtuous network.

Loan contracts have been signed with these financial institutions. These loans cover the investments necessary for the development of district heating for the first five years of the public service delegation granted to the Heating Company. The planned works concern the extension and modernization of the distribution network as well as improvements in production capacity in order to increase energy efficiency, develop the use of renewable resources and reduce CO2 emissions on the territory.

This network development strategy, based on so-called “clean” energies, now makes it possible to reach more than 70% of renewable and recoverable energies (urban waste, biomass, etc.) to reach 85% in 2022, with a target of 100% in 2033.

The BioMax plant (I posted a post on this several months ago) is under construction 2 km from my home.
In sight of pif I would say that the site is at two thirds.
Tourists can also see it since it is visible from the A48.

Not every forest is a "carbon sink". The ability of trees to sequester CO2 depends on many conditions. Climate, in particular. "When the rains are lacking for a long time, the function of the forest as a carbon sink is seriously disturbed," explains INRA. So much so that some forests, especially those in northern Europe and tropical forests, can temporarily become net emitters of CO2 during a prolonged drought. ”

Other factors can affect the forest. Insect attacks can considerably reduce its absorption capacity, and fires "can send into the atmosphere in a few hours all the CO2 that a forest has patiently accumulated over the decades," continues INRA.

The French timber industry emphasizes its role in the energy transition

AFP published on 04 Feb 2021

Wood, the "first" renewable energy in France, has a major role to play in the energy transition, stakeholders in the sector argued Thursday, emphasizing its development potential as well as the efforts made for air quality.

France has set itself the goal of doubling between 2016 and 2028 the renewable heat produced by biomass, with wood representing a large part of it.

However, since 2016, major projects have been lacking, mainly due to competition from gas, underlined Mathieu Fleury, president of the Interprofessional Committee for Wood Energy (CIB), specializing in collective uses (boiler rooms, heating networks, etc.) and industrial. "We are a bit at a standstill, but the players are ready to start again and are just waiting for the projects," he said during a press point, referring to the "high energy yields" of these systems and "a local resource" of which "the industry is concerned to take care".

Some of these installations can consume up to 150 tonnes of wood, all of which are "structuring projects for the sector". As for domestic heating (logs, pellets), France is targeting 000 to 10,2 million households equipped in 11,3, against 2028 million today, at constant total consumption thanks to the better efficiency of the appliances.

But if the profession puts forward a virtuous CO2 balance (via forest renewal, the use of resources from recycling and avoided fossil emissions), the combustion of wood pollutes the air via the particles it releases. For Aymeric de Galembert, of the Seguin group and of the Renewable Energies Union (SER), the solution will come from modern, more efficient devices. "Rather than prohibiting wood heating in certain valleys or towns, we must encourage the renewal of the park," he argues, while a National Air Council is to meet in the days to come.

The sector advocates educational actions based on good practices (for example ignition from above, or use of dry fuels). "The profession, now very structured, is ready to participate in this campaign," said Mr. de Galembert, also calling for a reduction in the VAT rate to 5,5% for quality fuels.

The industry also regrets the government's abandonment of the carbon tax issue. "We need a re-implementation of this tax, better explain it, with perhaps support for households dependent on fossil fuels, from which we must get out," said Mr. Fleury.

The forest covers 31% of France (2,7 billion m3 of trees, according to IGN) and continues to grow. Professionals argue for "rigorous management": out of 91 million m3 of natural increase, 56% are taken, for energy, construction or even paper. Depending on the sector, one job is generated for 1 tonnes of wood collected.

Mérignac will host the ninth biomass boiler in the Bordeaux agglomeration

BY FRÉDÉRIC DOUARDJANUARY 25, 2021

The Bordeaux agglomeration, which already has seven collective wood heating plants (Hauts de Garonne, Ginko, Bassins à flots, Pellegrin and Charles Perrens hospitals, IUT de Talence, residence des Aubiers, Terres Neuve and Lycée Vaclav Havel in Bègles) and an industrial boiler room of 30 MW in the sunflower shell in Bassens, will accommodate a new biomass boiler in Mérignac.

To meet climate, environmental and social expectations, the mixed economy company Bordeaux Métropole Énergies, the main arm of the agglomeration in terms of energy, created in 2011, in partnership with the operator IDEX, the company Mixéner which has the mission of Bordeaux to create and operate virtuous heating and cooling networks. The company, which already manages two wood-fired boilers, has undertaken the creation of a third in Mérignac in the western suburbs of Bordeaux, a town well known for hosting the agglomeration's airport.

Mixéner's first wood boiler
In 2013, Mixéner, in partnership with Dalkia Smart Building and Idex, created the “Project” subsidiary Énergie des Bassins SAS for the construction and operation of the Bassins à Flot heating network and its 6 MW biomass boiler. To supply the 5 housing units in the project, the energy mix includes 500% wood and 50% heat recovered at the Louis Fargue wastewater treatment plant.
