ARTE Europa: an Austrian village eco model of Europe

by jean63 » 17/01/07, 22:06

It's in a moment on ARTE:

The European of the week is Austrian and mayor of a city that has become a model for all of Europe: Güssing.
Elected mayor in 1992, Peter Vadasz succeeded in ten years, making his small town of 4000 souls the European model of alternative energies. The village on the Austro-Hungarian border was gradually losing its inhabitants, it has since created more than 1000 jobs. His secret: use the surrounding woods to first heat, then create electricity, and finally produce fuel. The former schoolmaster won his bet, largely supported by European Union money. He now wants to export the model to the surrounding area and supply its entire region with energy. Portrait of a visionary.

Only when he has brought down the last tree, the last river contaminated, the last fish caught that man will realize that money is not edible (Indian MOHAWK).
