At a WHO press conference on Monday, infectious disease specialist Maria Van Kerkhove said currently available data suggested that asymptomatic people would transmit COVID-19 very little.
Experts were quick to question this statement, especially since a study published no later than June 3 in The Annal of Internal Medicine suggests that around 40% to 45% of COVID-19 cases do not have symptoms, but that they can nevertheless transmit the disease in a proportion which remains to be determined. Research has already shown that pre-symptomatic people can transmit the virus before they develop symptoms.
"This goes against my impressions of science so far which suggests that asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic people are a major source of infection for others," responded a professor from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medecine, Liam Smeeth, whose comments were broadcast on the Science Media Center website ....
