Solar panel and absorption fridge: which inverter is needed?

by eulenspi26 » 20/07/19, 20:38

Hello,

I recovered a fridge absorption (yes, so without compressor and without power requirement to start) Electrolux 220 V exclusively seems. It works very well under 220 V.
And I have a 500 photovoltaic panel mm * 320 mm 12 V whose characteristics (on the label) are:
Pmax 30 W
Ipmax 1.6 A
Vpmax 18 V
Isc 1.8 A
Voc 21 V

I wish to dedicate this panel to the fridge to be able to keep the vegetables of the garden with 10 or 15 ° C of less than the outside temperature, in a way to make it a small cold room.

What do I need to buy as an inverter converter to switch from DC to AC.

I find on the web converters at low prices that would suit me to do this, but they often indicate protections that cut the hardware as soon as the voltage goes under 9.6 V or above 14 V.
And is it necessary for a fridge resistance (this is just that) a converter

These converters often display power from 600 to 5000 W (!) Is this a blocking factor (consumption of the beast higher than the energy sent by the panel)?
In addition some are pure sinus and others not ... Is it important for my fridge resistance?

In short, you will understand, I am a little lost, lack of solid knowledge in electricity, but I am not obtuse and am willing to learn.

If any of the converter specialists can help me make my choice ...

Thank you for your feedback.

Your choice is quite questionable: the absorption fridges have a deplorable performance compared to compressor fridges, and their use is justified only in the absence of electricity, or access to abundant thermal energy and good market; a fridge compressor (with a converter 600 W for example) would provide you with much better results ...

If the resistance of your fridge-absorption worked in 12 V (and I am surprised that this refrigerator does not have the option 12 V), no converter is obviously essential; on the other hand the power of your PV panel will certainly be insufficient (you would need at least 100 or 200 W, which would be enough for only about a quarter of the time); by installing 200W panels (and a battery of 2 kWh), you can use a moderate power converter (400-500W) and operate your fridge absorption. But I doubt that the results are up to your hopes ...

Thank you Bardal for your response to my request.

I know that the absorption fridge is not the best performance, but my 30 W panel will not start the compressor!
I want a direct connection of the panel to the fridge, without battery.

Even if the yield is low, I will gain a few degrees that will be enough to make a reserve of vegetables from the garden.
And if it works I'll buy a second panel and make a small cold room powered by the fridge.

My question therefore remains on the ad hoc converter.

Would this one be suitable?

With a panel that provides the best 30W and an inverter that takes 0,9A (11W) empty, it will not work.
To keep vegetables cool, take a peletier module instead. The best remaining 12V cooler on car outlet. Take a module that consumes at least 25W so as not to burn the module of the cooler (2A type under 12V)

The converter that you quote would be perfect, but it is unnecessarily powerful (500-600 watts would suffice) and therefore a consumer very waste.

Anyway, your panel 30 W, it is not powerful enough to operate a fridge, even small; check the features of your fridge, but it is likely that it is close to 100 W. Moreover, it will only work when there is sun, so at least not at night. You commit yourself to an option that is doomed to failure ...

The solution would be to have a PV panel 250-300 W (if it's more, it's better), a battery of 100 A / h and a converter 500-600 W feeding a thermo-dynamic fridge classic, which would allow you to ensure in 95% of cases; only the winter will be difficult, but in the winter a refrigerator consumes little or not used at all.

Sorry to be so direct, but some laws are unavoidable ...

PS You find in the advertisement that you quote, a small converter of 600 W, in sinus stinks, at 27 € which would be perfect for a fridge; an electric motor works best in "pure sine", whereas a resistor doesn't give a damn about the shape of the wave.

Thank you Enerc.
Would a Peltier module of this type be enough to cool a very well insulated cabinet?

Is the blue module in the middle the ventilation unit? It then takes an outside air intake and an external discharge; that's it ?
Thank you for your lights.

I'm giving up…

Try your editing, it will cost you a few dollars ... There is only the test of reality that can convince you ...

Excuse me Bardal, I do not seek to feed a fridge; I'm just looking to refresh a wardrobe in summer and fall.

Yes, well that's a fridge, a refrigerated cabinet ... And summer and autumn, these are the toughest conditions ...

And an obligation: the energy source (PV panels) must be more powerful than the equipment used, including the inevitable losses.
