Electric car: 697.612 kms to become green!

It's an RTBF info. An amazing figure. The fruit of a calculation never made by Professor Damien Ernst. A figure to contextualize: it concerns an electric car manufactured today, and equipped with a battery of 60 kw / h, but it would not reflect the future ... because the pace of change will accelerate in the automotive and electrical world ! The electric car remains a solution for the future!

The RTBF Auto Mobile magazine's survey started with a simple question: "how many kilometers do I have to travel with an electric car for it to start becoming greener than a petrol car with a petrol engine?" This question is urgent when we learn, for example, that 50% of the range of the PSA Group (Peugeot-Citroën) will be electric or Hybrid next year, and 100% in 2025 !!

Production and catastrophic production!

The electricity we consume today is not yet green! It is a European mix from power plants (coal, gas, nuclear) and solar and wind. The manufacture of batteries is even more worrying: extraction of cobalt mainly in mines (very polluting) in the Republic of Congo by Chinese operators who are not very respectful of the environment and human rights (use of children). To manufacture a battery, lithium is also needed from the salt extracted from the evaporation of water. The extraction activity is very productive in the Andean Cordillera, and its white salt deserts, where we already deplore environmental problems of drying. Aluminum is less problematic to find. Nickel could be a solution for the future to replace cobalt, as evoked by ENGIE's electric mobility specialist, Mikaël Dekoster.

Scientific calculation

Bored with articles and incomplete speeches on the issue, Auto Mobile magazine asked Professor Ernst for a scientific calculation. Specialist in energy issues at the University of Liège, Professor Damien Ernst relied on the scientific literature to calculate the energy cost of a battery (18.696 kg of CO2). Its demonstration is then based on the European average of the CO2 releases per kwh produced, multiplied by 100 kms: 11kgCO2 / 100kms for an electric, and 13.68 kgCO2 / 100kms for a gasoline. Taking into account this differential (2,68) but also the energy-consuming cost of manufacturing a battery, Professor Ernst arrives at this amazing number of 697.612 kms to go with an electric car so that it starts to become greener than a car. gasoline engine car.

The calculation was also based on an assumption of consumption of vehicles: 20 kwh / 100kms in electric (which is rather optimistic because we were rather above 30 kwh during our tests Auto Mobile) and 6 liters of gasoline / 100kms (also optimistic for an equivalent model, the average rising more often to 8 liters / 100kms).

The average will (must) fall!

If we postpone this figure from 697.612kms to a city dweller of 24 kwh, considering that it would consume even less 20kwh / 100kms, the balance could be reached between 150.000 kms and 200.000kms ... and even 30-40.000kms if and only if electricity was produced in a 100% renewable way! This is not yet the case, but many scientific minds (and hopefully politicians) are working on it.

It's possible !

Professor Didier Heusdens (Autoform) says in the Auto Mobile report, "it is possible", but decisions will have to be taken quickly to manufacture the batteries and produce electricity with renewable energy. Specialists expect 50% of electric cars in the fleet by 2030 (to be shared with Hydrogen and hybrids). Consumers will also have to change their habits: rent and / or share their car; install a more powerful electric terminal at home (90% of recharging is done at home); reinject the kw not consumed back to the house; recharge your car according to a program defining the best time (depending on the wind and / or the sun); equip yourself with a (recycled) battery for storing the energy accumulated during the best hours to reinject it into the car or household.

Boundaries for cities!

In this case, the electric car will make sense. It is a solution to urban pollution because it emits no emission of Co2 and NOX (fine particles) while driving, with the real exception of particles released by braking and tires. Which, in NOX, is also the case of the latest Euro6D 2019 diesel! Cities (or companies) will therefore have to invest in a maximum of recharging terminals available for electric cars that sleep at night in the street, or parked there during the day during working hours.

Taxation to review

It will also review the taxation (still based on the power in kw home!) Electric vehicles for individuals. Because currently, only the independents benefit from tax benefits: 120% deductibility again this year, and 100% from 2020. Traffic taxes (80,52 €) and circulation fees (61,50 €) could also be corrected.

Lost pleasure?

This is a false debate! Apart from sports cars and high-end equipped with noble engines (+ 4 cylinders), so for most cars, the driving pleasure provided by an electric car is superior. It is rationally explained by an incomparable immediate arrival of power and torque (equal car), the balance provided by the lowered center of gravity (batteries under the floor) and the zenitude that causes its conduct. The security aspect incriminating its lack of noise seems to us to be a false debate because, apart from sports cars, the noises emitted by a car are mainly from tires and air movement. Users encountered during the making of this Auto Mobile folder are unanimous!

I watched the first moments of the reasoning of the university "teacher" ... I stopped after 1 minute so much that disgusted me! : Shock: : Shock: : Shock:

He mixes everything! Take the gray energy of the batteries (exit the hat on his phone ... no source!), Convert it into L gas (???) then CO2 ... it does not even take the energy conversion efficiency ! It's a clown!

This is a completely phony reasoning and this guy has a post of university teacher in Belgium? I dream ... he should be fired on the field!

The problem is that all cons will believe!

If you can afford an 30 0000 110 electric car, I think you can pay for a photovoltaic solar system at 000 € right? 5000 € invested in PV is enough to erase a large part (or even following the annual km and the location of the installation) of the road power consumption !!!

After we are not all smart on earth ... there are some more than others (but who think themselves clever and have a little power: they are the worst ...) ... this teacher is a good example! Sorry but I still do not come back! It must rot on social networks!

By the way, 6 liters of hydrocarbon (what a car consumes at 100 with a person on board) represents approximately 60 - 70 kw the equivalent of 15 000 to 18 000 km in electric bicycle : Shock:

6 L = 6 * 10 kWh = 60 kWh PRIMARY or approximately 20 kWh "useful" ... (30% efficiency)

Be careful not to make the same mistake as the teacher of RTBF who mixes everything ...

An electric bike is 5 to 10 Wh per km depending on driving conditions ... these 20 kWh "useful" would therefore allow between (20 / 000 and 5 / 20) 000 to 10 km ...It is still 40 20 times better than a car ... thermal or electric it's the same since an electric car consumes roughly 200 Wh per km or 20 kWh 100 ...
