(France) Taxes: a phishing attack promises to refund you an overpayment to better rip you off!

By Florian Bayard, 07 / 12 / 2017

Good news, you have just received an email from the French tax authorities: you have paid too much tax this year and you will be refunded! Unfortunately for you, this email does not come from the fisc but from a gang of pirates. Particularly well-crafted, this phishing attempt mimics official emails to steal your bank details. How to spot these phishing mails?

According to a tweet from the National Police, a new phishing campaign is currently taking place in France. The pirates usurp the identity of the French tax authorities to lull your vigilance. This is not the first time that pirates imitate an official institution. At the beginning of October 2017, crooks pretended to be the bank of France. As usual, the method used was the same: hackers bait you with a potential gain, or try to scare you so that you fill out a form without asking too many questions. That's where they get what they want: your bank details!
