Attack on the Gulf of Tonkin

by Christophe » 17/09/06, 18:49

The attack on the Gulf of Tonkin was the trigger for the Vietnam War. 40 years later, the American authorities admit to having greatly exaggerated the incident in the Gulf of Tonkin. A lie that cost the lives of 2 million Vietnamese and 50 Americans ...

The Gulf of Tonkin incidents refers to two incidents on August 2 and 4, 1964 in which two American destroyers who were in international waters were allegedly attacked by Vietnamese gunboats, which was followed by the Gulf of Tonkin resolution and led to escalation in the Vietnam War.

During the first attack, USS Maddox (DD-731) suffered very superficial damage while no damage was sustained during the second. Subsequent research, including a National Security Agency report released in 2005, questioned the existence of the second attack, which appears to have been the result of a misinterpretation by a radar operator.

In 1961 and 1962, President Kennedy reinforced the American presence. In November 1963, there were 16 military advisers. On November 000, the CIA funds a coup against the President of South Vietnam, Ngo Dinh Diem, who initiated secret talks with the Communists. Diem is killed and another government is put in place. President Kennedy, wishing to inaugurate detente with Moscow, ordered the withdrawal of 16 American advisers before Christmas 1 and of all American advisers before the end of 000. On November 1963, 1965, President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. His successor, Lyndon Johnson, canceled and increased the withdrawal of troops. This growing involvement is motivated by fear of threats of the expansion of communism. There will be no formal declaration of war. So that, legally, the so-called "Vietnam War" never existed, since a war is a rule of law with a beginning, an end, belligerents, a space and a time, as well as rights. and well-defined duties. But, in 22, the United States Congress approved the Gulf of Tonkin resolution (August 1963, 1964) (named after the place where the “Gulf of Tonkin incidents” took place on August 7 and 1964, 2), which provided a broad support for President Johnson for increased American involvement.
