Thin grilled :)

Like many other transgenic plants, so-called “Bt” corn synthesizes its own pesticide: a toxic protein, produced in its leaves and stems, which kills its pests within a few days. Unstoppable… unless the insect populations adapt to this toxin! So far, the strategies put in place to counter the emergence of resistance have appeared effective. But IRD researchers and their South African partners have just shown that a moth, Busseola fusca, has developed in South Africa a new mode of defense against the Bt toxin. Resistance, genetically dominant unlike the classic mechanism, which has spread very quickly. This discovery, published in PLoS ONE, calls into question the very principle on which the anti-resistance strategy which generally accompanies the use of GMOs is based. (...)

Hello
to believe that our learned scholars do not know how to learn from the past. (See successive influenza viruses). Whenever we believe we have found the answer by a vaccine, it is always a metro behind the new virus (hence the illusion of vaccines), which the general public begins to realize account. Likewise for GMOs; "nature" is more complex than the dangerous DIY of Monsanto and company, hence these resistances which can also cause problems by breaking the ecological chain and replacing a blind with a blind man!

GMO cotton: Burkina Faso seeks redress from Monsanto

By Claire Fages RFI on April 6, 2016

Burkina Faso feels aggrieved by the lower quality of its cotton since it adopted GMO seeds from Monsanto. The Burkinabè cotton inter-trade claims from the American seed company nearly 50 billion CFA francs, the equivalent of 74 million euros
.

Burkina Faso seeks compensation from Monsanto. Since the cotton companies adopted their Bollgard II seeds, a genetically modified variety to fight against cotton worms, Burkina Faso cotton has lost one of its main assets: the length of its fiber, the first quality criterion of cotton, because that a long silk facilitates the manufacture of the thread.

From 2012, the decline in quality of Burkinabè transgenic cotton was felt… in the income received by cotton companies. Burkinabè cotton was discounted compared to other West African cottons on the world market. But it is difficult for cotton companies in Burkina Faso to give up BT cotton seeds overnight. They were popular with farmers because they required fewer pesticide passes and significantly improved yields for the less well-trained farmers.

Financial loss

Monsanto was also committed to reworking its seeds, but obviously without success to date. From year to year, cotton companies have therefore reduced GMO cotton, which had reached up to 80% of the surface. This year, farmers are asked to completely renounce transgenic cotton and to sow only conventional cotton.

The new managing director of Sofitex, one of the main cotton companies, has taken stock of the damage: 20 to 30 CFA francs less per pound of cotton now. An even heavier financial loss in this period of depressed prices, but also moral damage, Burkina Faso cotton has lost its reputation, it is the country's white gold, the second resource after metal gold.

Failing to succeed in its discreet negotiations with Monsanto, the Burkinabè cotton inter-profession (AICB) now claims from the American seed giant 48,3 billion CFA francs, about 74 million euros. A reasonable request in the eyes of professionals in the sector.
