Poison: our daily risk (packaging, clothing ...)

3 documentaries broadcast tonight on the toxicity of packaging ... including clothing (which is a form of packaging of course):

Pollute less, live better

The 3.7.2012 to 00h00

A virtuous cycle: loop recycling, a concept invented by researcher Michael Braungart.

The idea is simple: all products manufactured must be fully recyclable or biodegradable in order to be reused, buried, composted or incinerated without risk.

By following this principle, the German chemist has, for example, manufactured as healthy dyes as beet juice!

This principle works for the life cycle as well as for the industrial cycle: like the Aurubis copper smelter in Hamburg, many companies recycle the precious metal, which is then used in electronic components.

Packaging that kills

Faced with the rise in the number of toxic substances in food, scientists and consumers are alerting.

At a time when "shelf life" products are increasingly popular, customers do not suspect the existence of hazardous substances in sealed packaging and in the foods with which they come in contact.

This is the case of Bisphenol A, which is found in rigid plastic containers and can cause heart disease or weaken the immune system.
Same risk with phthalates used to laminate packaging materials. Acting as hormones, they can cause infertility in men.
Many products are on the list of banned substances by the European Union but as it imports massively products from Asia, where the regulations are hardly restrictive ...

Poison in our clothes

Testimonies in support, the documentary lifts the veil on the dangerous products present in the clothes, accused of being at the origin of multiple diseases.

Rita Lemoine had no idea that her new shoes contained dimethylfumarate, a fungicide that caused her a dramatic cutaneous reaction and muscular paralysis.
Since 2009, this product is banned in the EU, but many imported objects, especially from China, are not controlled. If in Asia, chromium, pigments and chlorine still make as many victims in tanneries, European textile workers are not spared either.
For example, Frauke Driessen, who has been wearing jeans for a major clothing brand for ten years, became ill following the presence in her blood of dichloromethane, a carcinogen that is also present in her factory.
