would not it be good for fine particles?

Important question to answer in this study making a comparison of the different complementary fact techniques:

We could put some on the diesels, in simplified form, and if we don't do it, it's that we make fun of dead by diesel, as for the dead by junk food even more numerous and invisible !!

In great simplicity to DIY, a rod in the middle on 2m at high voltage !!!

it is not obvious that a piece of wire hanging in the chimney is enough to make a good electrostatic filter

I did some testing ... when it is done no matter how it consumes too much power ... or it is ineffective

when I see the fashion for flexible stainless steel tubing, no way to put an electrode in it

another problem: a low gas speed is required in the electrostatic filter: therefore the filter must be larger than the normal chimney tube

as long as you make a good filter, put it next to the boiler, and with a good filter that stops any need for sweeping

the electrostatic filter never becomes clogged, but it loses its effectiveness as soon as the deposited dust changes the shape of the electrodes: it is therefore useful to put another type of filter to stop large dust

my preference therefore remains in passing in a pile of wet pebble: called scruber

we see on the previous graph that it is not the best, but it combines several functions: radical NOx stop by chemical reaction with limestone ... stop sulfuric, hydrochloric, acetic acids ... condensation and complete recovery of the heat

drawback: the outgoing gas is cold and no longer rises: there is a risk that the fairly concentrated C02 of this smoke will dangerously accumulate in the low spots: solution mix it with a sufficient volume of air so that it does not risk to accumulate

the scubber forgets the finest particles: so the electrostatic filter could complete it: but I prefer a wood chip filter ... when the wood chips are dirty we use them as fuel: woodchips can be used as filter media before serving as fuel ... of course it is only possible at the outlet of the scuber where the smoke is completely cold

Completely agree with Chatelot16, which shows that with imagination, there are plenty of solutions, plus the filter, goes with a good heat exchanger, which is missing on almost all commercial stoves and inserts , with filtration system, shaking the deposits of soot and particles, to make them fall back into the flames of the fire !!

There are plenty of solutions, with some effective and inexpensive, that we almost refuse to implement, all of us !!
