Italy: protest against pollution, Ilva promises to clean the site of Taranto
The event brought together 2.000 people in Taranto on Friday to denounce the pollution of the Ilva plant in a peaceful climate thanks to the commitment of management to invest 150 million in pollution control to ensure that the site is closed.
The demonstrators marched to cries of "Free Taranto" and "we want to live", according to an AFP photographer. The father of a child who was just three years old with cancer held up a sign saying "how many more?"
After a minute of silence for "the victims of Ilva", they applauded the name of the judge Patrizia Todisco who, at the end of July, placed in receivership the "hot" installations (blast furnaces, coking plant ...) of the factory in connection with an investigation for "environmental disaster".
In her expected, the judge had cited health studies showing abnormal excess mortality near the site (15 30% more cancers than elsewhere between 1995 and 2002) because of the rejection of many pollutants including dioxin.
At the forum Friday, a pediatrician from the Tamburi district, near the factory, testified with emotion of the damage caused by pollution to the health of residents. "I would have liked to come here with as many black armbands as the children I saw die," Grazia Parisi explained.
The demonstration was organized by associations, including a very active civic committee, and was supported by a left-wing opposition party (Italy of Values) but none of the powerful unions or major political parties.
They oppose a closure of the site on the grounds that 9 28 million tons of steel produced in Italy come out and the factory gives work to 20.000 people (including 11.500 live) while unemployment exceeds the 30% in Taranto, three times the national average.
Following a meeting at the Prefecture in the presence of Ministers of Economic Development and Environment, the boss of Ilva, Bruno Ferrante said the company will invest 146 million in site remediation .
He presented a detailed plan for the decontamination work which the leftist president of the Puglia region, Nichi Vendola, considered as "at least a start".
The government brandished the threat of an appeal before the Constitutional Court also adopted a calmer tone, especially toward the judge Todisco.
"Collaboration with the judiciary is and will be total", declared the Minister of Economic Development Corrado Passera, wishing "that irremediable decisions are not taken". The government is involved because it has allocated more than 330 million euros to clean up the site.
The Ilva record became a legal mess. After the decision of the judge Todisco put seals on part of the plant, a local court said that production could continue during the consolidation period. Coup de theater last Friday: Todisco the judge issued an order to clarify that production had to be stopped during this phase, against which Ilva resorted appeal.
The 2 August, thousands of workers of the Ilva plant marched to call for backup from their posts, citing their preference "die of cancer than starve".

it is terribly sad.
but the list is long
iter against job
Nuclear against job
make war against job
...
and without looking at Africa where it is not the job that is sought is to find room until tomorrow
Here THEY came with "Schist against employment": well we prefer to suck the stones and throw them in the face (to be polite)

Indeed: in legal terms it is not at all workers to take such a risk!
They are therefore not at all to say that they prefer the risk of cancer or risk losing their jobs!
For the protection of workers rests with the employer must:
- Do diligence in this matter.
- monitor the health of its “at risk” employees, to ensure that they are not overexposed over time.
- Open its chain of production / manufacturing to government health contôles, even if they are made inappropriately or unexpectedly as a true random agenda;
- Give them all the means of prevention and precaution allowing them to escape contamination (gloves, respirators, coveralls or what do I know ...)
- To create an industrial process that ensures minimum risk to the environment and towards employees first.
- Apply in cases of doubt, the precautionary principle.
etc ...
And of course it would reverse the burden of proof! The employer to prove the safety of its processes, and not the employee to prove that he has indeed been contaminated and that his health has suffered damage! For it is well known, it is generally not listening victims ... Suspected of being partly guilty for their a priori condition (which is a shame)!

(For now, it seems that shale gas does not feed many people?)

Sad to say but the multinationals get their way. What weight 300000 ardéchois against millions of $ of dividends: peanuts. Except here is the Corsican (Mainland). Everything burns very quickly.
And behind every 1 CRS Ardèche it's more expensive than dividends.
Thank you for the reminder, I wanted to mention ELF also: it's about you ...
I did it on purpose. So these boxes are linked.
