Bio-DME, a promising fuel for the trucks of tomorrow
In collaboration with several market players, including the producer of Bio-DME Chemrec and the oil company Preem, Volvo has developed a transport solution integrating the entire operating cycle of Bio-DME (dimethyl ether), since its production and distribution until its use on Volvo trucks within several transport companies.
The biofuel that is the subject of this project is produced from black liquor - a product derived from the production of paper pulp - in the gasification plant of Chemrec in Piteå. Bio-DME can also be produced from other renewable raw materials. If the production system of Bio-DME is perfected, will the distribution of this fuel on a large scale largely depend on the incentives implemented in the field of renewable fuels.
Compared to a conventional engine, a diesel powered by Bio-DME offers equivalent performance and a lower noise level. In addition, the use of Bio-DME in place of diesel makes it possible to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 95%. In addition, the combustion process generates very few emissions of particles and nitrogen oxides. All these advantages make Bio-DME an ideal fuel for diesel engines.
DME is a gas but transforms into a liquid at a low pressure of only 5 bars. It is as easy to handle as propane. DME can be derived from natural gas but also from different types of biomass. In the latter case, it then takes the name Bio-DME.
