Take out your telescopes!

An asteroid will graze Earth on Monday afternoon

It is called "2011 MD". This asteroid about ten meters long will graze the Earth this Monday afternoon. According to NASA, which spotted the celestial object thanks to its telescopes installed in New Mexico, 2011 MD will pass 12 km above the South Atlantic around 300:15 p.m. (French time).

The asteroid, adds the US space agency, will at times sufficiently illuminated to be visible by medium-sized telescopes (around one meter in diameter). On France Info, space consultant Serge Brunier explains that 12 km is "extremely close to the scale of the sky". Enough to pass satellites and for Earth's gravity to change its trajectory.

The American agency assures however that there is no risk of collision. Serge Brunier specifies that "even if there was a collision, this object is so small - it's a rock, it's the asteroid of the little prince - that nothing would happen: crossing at around 30 km / h the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere, it would melt, burn and explode ".

This NASA simulation clearly shows the change in trajectory that the asteroid will make due to gravity. So much so that the American agency calls its page devoted to the subject "Bend it like Beckham", in reference to the curved trajectory that the British footballer imprints on his free kicks.
